✧ A man entered upon us at midday. I said, "O servant of Allah, from where have you come?" He said, "I and a companion of mine came in search of something for us. My companion went off searching, and I entered to shade myself in the shade and drink from the drink." So I went to some sour milk—or she said, I went to some sour diluted milk—and gave him to drink from it. He drank, and I drank. She said: I studied his features and said, "O servant of Allah, who are you?" He said, "I am Abu Bakr." I said, "Are you Abu Bakr, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, of whom I have heard?" He said, "Yes." She said: Then I recalled our raids against Khath'am, and our raids against one another in the pre-Islamic era, and the affection and the ropes of the tents that Allah brought. Ibn 'Awn interlaced his fingers and Mu'adh described it to us, and Ahmad interlaced. I said, "O servant of Allah, until when do you see this affair of the people?" He said, "As long as the leaders remain upright." I said, "Who are the leaders?" He said, "Have you not seen the chief who is in the encampment, and they follow him and obey him? So as long as those remain upright."
