✧ Umar b. al-Khattab, whenever he prayed a prayer, would sit for the people; whoever had a need would speak to him, otherwise he would rise. One day I attended at the door and said: 'O Yarfa!', so he came out, and Uthman was at the door. Yarfa went out and said: 'Rise, O son of Affan; rise, O son of Abbas.' We entered upon Umar, and he had heaps of wealth. He said: 'I examined the people of Madinah and saw that you two have the most kinsfolk among them. Take this wealth and divide it; if there is surplus, return it.' I said: 'And if there is shortage, will you give us more?' He said: 'A trait from Akhshan. You know that Muhammad and his family used to eat hard, coarse food.' I said: 'Yes, by Allah, if Allah had opened this upon Muhammad, he would have done with it other than what you have done.' He became angry and heaved until his ribs moved, and said: 'Then what would he have done?' I said: 'Then he would have eaten and fed us.' So it was relieved from him.
