What scholars said about it
In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.
- Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī
machine translationSome of them declared it defective (aʿalla) because it was a written document (kitāb), but that is not a damaging defect; and because its chain contains inconsistency (iḍṭirāb). Ibn Ḥibbān rejected this, saying that Ibn ʿUkaym heard the document being read out, and that elders from Juhaynah heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so there is no inconsistency.
in سنن ابن ماجه, p. 3724 - Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
تركه
machine translationHe abandoned it.
machine translationA hadith not fit to be used as evidence.
in سنن ابن ماجه, p. 3724 - Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī
machine translationThen Imam Aḥmad abandoned it when they differed inconsistently (iḍṭirāb) about its chain.

- Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd
machine translationThe weakening by those who weakened it is not because of the men, for they are all trustworthy (thiqāt); rather the weakness should be attributed to the inconsistency (iḍṭirāb).
machine translationA good (ḥasan) hadith.
machine translationI heard Aḥmad b. al-Ḥasan say: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal held to this hadith until two months before his death, and he would say: this was the last of the Prophet's ﷺ affairs. Then Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal abandoned this hadith when they differed inconsistently (iḍṭirāb) about its chain.
