✧ Abd al-Rahman b. Abd al-Qari, who was in charge of the treasury with Abdullah b. al-Arqam during the time of Umar b. al-Khattab, reported that Umar went out one night in Ramadan accompanied by Abd al-Rahman b. Abd al-Qari. He toured the mosque, and the people in the mosque were scattered in separate groups: a man praying alone, and a man praying with a small group following his prayer. Umar said: By Allah, I think if we gathered these people behind one reciter, it would be better. Then Umar resolved to do that and ordered Ubayy b. Ka'b to lead them in prayer during Ramadan. Umar came out to them while the people were praying behind their reciter, and he said: This is an excellent innovation, and the one you sleep through is better than the one you stand for—meaning the last part of the night. The people used to stand in the first part of the night, and they used to curse the disbelievers in the middle: O Allah, fight the disbelievers who obstruct Your path, deny Your messengers, and do not believe in Your promise. Divide their unity, cast terror into their hearts, and send upon them Your punishment and torment, O God of Truth. Then he would send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and supplicate for the Muslims with whatever good he could, then he would seek forgiveness for the believers. He said: When he finished cursing the disbelievers, sending blessings upon the Prophet, seeking forgiveness for the believing men and women, and making his requests, he would say: O Allah, You alone we worship, and to You we pray and prostrate, and to You we strive and hasten. We hope for Your mercy, our Lord, and fear Your severe punishment. Indeed, Your punishment will overtake those whom You oppose. Then he would say the takbir and go down into prostration.
