Hind and her mutilation of Ḥamza

Translation

✧ [Al-Ḥulays's objection to Abū Sufyān's mutilation of Ḥamzah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥulays b. Zabbān, brother of Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Manāh, who was that day chief of the Abīsh, had passed by Abū Sufyān while he was striking the cheek of Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib with the butt of a spear and saying, "Taste that, you rebel!" Al-Ḥulays said, "O Banū Kinānah, is this the chief of Quraysh doing what you see to his cousin's flesh?" He said, "Woe to you! Keep it hidden from me, for it was a slip." [Abū Sufyān's gloating over the Muslims after Uḥud and his exchange with ʿUmar] Then Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, when he wanted to depart, climbed the mountain, then shouted at the top of his voice, saying: "You have done well; war is a series of alternating fortunes, day for day. Exalted be Hubal!"—that is, "Make your religion prevail." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Rise, ʿUmar, and answer him. Say: God is higher and more glorious. It is not equal: our slain are in Paradise, and your slain are in the Fire." When ʿUmar answered Abū Sufyān, Abū Sufyān said to him, "Come over to me, ʿUmar." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿUmar, "Go to him and see what his matter is." So he went to him, and Abū Sufyān said to him, "I adjure you by God, ʿUmar, have we killed Muḥammad?" ʿUmar said, "O God, no, and he is listening to your words right now." He said, "You are more truthful to me than Ibn Qamiʾah and more righteous, for Ibn Qamiʾah said to them, 'I have killed Muḥammad.'" Ibn Hishām said: The name of Ibn Qamiʾah was ʿAbd Allāh.
