Hind and her mutilation of Ḥamza
Translation
✧ [Umar's urging of Hassān to satirize Hind bt. ʿUtbah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān related to me that it was related to him that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said to Ḥassān b. Thābit: O son of al-Furayʿah—Ibn Hishām said: al-Furayʿah is bt. Khālid b. Khunays, and it is said: Khunays: b. Ḥārithah b. Lawdhān b. ʿAbd Wudd b. Zayd b. Thaʿlabah b. al-Khazraj b. Sāʿidah b. Kaʿb b. al-Khazraj—if you had heard what Hind says, and I saw her most insolent, standing upon a rock chanting rajz against us and mentioning what she did to Ḥamzah? Ḥassān said to him: By God, I was looking at the spear descending while I was on the top of Fāriʿ—meaning his fort—and I said: By God, this is a weapon that is not a weapon of the Arabs, and it seems that it was descending only toward Ḥamzah, and I do not know; but let me hear some of her words, and I will suffice you against her. He said: So ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb recited to him some of what she said; then Ḥassān b. Thābit said: Al-Furayʿah's son displayed malice, and her custom was baseness when she displayed malice along with disbelief. Ibn Hishām said: This verse is among verses of his that we have omitted, and also verses of his rhyming in dāl, and other verses rhyming in dhāl, because he used obscene language in them.
