Abū Sufyān's threat to the Muslims

Translation

✧ [Abū Sufyān's threat to the Muslims] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Abū Sufyān called out: "Indeed there has been mutilation among your slain. By God, I did not approve of it, nor did I dislike it, nor did I forbid it, nor did I command it." When Abū Sufyān and those with him departed, he called out: "Your appointed time is Badr next year." So the Messenger of God ﷺ said to a man from his companions: "Say: Yes, it is an appointment between us and you." [ʿAlī's going out in the tracks of the polytheists] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and said: "Go out in the tracks of the people and see what they are doing and what they intend. If they have turned the horses aside and ridden the camels, they are heading for Makkah. If they have ridden the horses and driven the camels, they are heading for Madinah. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if they intend it, I will march against them therein, then I will engage them." ʿAlī said: I went out in their tracks to see what they were doing. They had turned the horses aside, ridden the camels, and headed for Makkah.
