Giving to those whose hearts were to be reconciled

Translation

✧ The poem of Ibn Mirdās considering what he took to be little and the Messenger's appeasing him Ibn Isḥāq said: He gave ʿAbbās b. Mirdās some camels, and he was displeased with them, so he remonstrated with the Messenger of God ﷺ about them. ʿAbbās b. Mirdās said, remonstrating with the Messenger of God ﷺ: They were spoils I took in charge by my wheeling On the colt in the rugged ground, And my rousing the folk lest they sleep; When the people slumbered, I did not slumber. So my spoil and the spoil of the slaves became Between ʿUyaynah and al-Aqraʿ. I had been in war one of resource, Yet I was given nothing and not refused, Except a few young camels I was given, As many as their four legs. Neither Ḥiṣn nor Ḥābis Surpassed my elder in the assembly, And I was not below either man of the two; And he whom time lays low will not be raised. Ibn Hishām said: Yūnus al-Naḥwī recited to me: Neither Ḥiṣn nor Ḥābis Surpassed Mirdās in the assembly. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Go with him and cut off his tongue from me." So they gave him until he was satisfied, and that was the cutting off of his tongue which the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded. Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge told me that ʿAbbās b. Mirdās came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "Are you the one who said: So my spoil and the spoil of the slaves became Between al-Aqraʿ and ʿUyaynah?" Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq said: "Between ʿUyaynah and al-Aqraʿ." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "They are one and the same." Abū Bakr said: "I bear witness that you are as God said: 'And We have not taught him poetry, nor is it fitting for him.'"
