Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: We aided the Messenger of God ﷺ out of anger for him, with a thousand mailed warriors whose unarmored ones are not counted. We bore for him on the spearhead a banner by which its upholder drives back in the whirlpool of death. We dyed it with blood, and its color is that, on the morning of Ḥunayn, the day when Ṣafwān's thickets clashed. We were for Islam his right wing, and to us belonged the knot of the standard and its bearer. We were for him, apart from the troops, an inner circle; he consulted us in his affair, and we consulted him. He summoned us and named us the vanguard of the battle cry, and we were for him a help against whoever opposed him. May God requite Muḥammad, from a prophet, with good, and support him with victory—God is his supporter. Ibn Hishām said: Someone of the people of knowledge in poetry recited to me from his saying, 'We were for Islam...' to the end, but he did not know the verse whose beginning is, 'We bore for him on the spearhead a banner'; and he recited to me after his saying, 'And to us belonged the knot of the standard and its bearer': 'And we dyed it with blood, and its color is that.' Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: Who will convey to the tribes that Muḥammad is the messenger of God, rightly guided wherever he purposes? He called upon his Lord and sought God's help alone, and he arose having fulfilled it to Him and been favored. We traveled by night and appointed with Muḥammad Qudayd, he leading us in a matter from God made firm. They disputed about us at dawn until they discerned with the dawn young men and a straightened thicket, upon horses, our coats of mail fastened upon us, and footmen like the surge of the torrent, a great army. The chiefs of the tribe, if you ask, are Sulaym, and among them are those who submitted. And a host of the Anṣār who do not desert him; they obeyed, and they do not disobey him as long as he speaks. If you have appointed Khālid over the people and put him forward, he has indeed gone before, with a host whom God guided—you are its commander—by which you strike in truth whoever was most unjust. I swore a righteous oath to Muḥammad, and I completed it: a thousand bridled horses. And the Prophet of the believers said, 'Advance!'—and it was beloved to us that we be the vanguard. We spent the night at Nahy al-Mustadīr, and there was no fear in us except desire and girding ourselves. We obeyed you until all the people submitted, and until we came upon the gathering, the people of Yalamlam, in the morning. The piebald, rose-colored stallion goes astray in its midst, and the old man is not at ease until he is branded. We rose against them like the coming of sandgrouse driven at forenoon, and each you see has held back from his brother. From morning until we left Ḥunayn in the evening, its flood channels flowing with blood. If you wish, from every side you saw a swift horse and its rider falling, and a shattered spear. Hawāzin had secured their herd from us, and it was beloved to them that we fail and be deprived.
