Translation

✧ [Poetry of Ḍamḍam on the day of Ḥunayn] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḍamḍam b. al-Ḥārith b. Jusham b. ʿAbd b. Ḥabīb b. Mālik b. ʿAwf b. Yaqaẓah b. ʿUṣayyah al-Sulamī said on the day of Ḥunayn, when Thaqīf had struck Kinānah b. al-Ḥakam b. Khālid b. al-Sharīd, and he had thereby killed Miḥjan and a cousin of his, both of Thaqīf: We brought the horses from no place of mustering To Jurash from the people of Zayyān and al-Fam; We kill the cubs of lions and seek Tyrants who were before us and had not been toppled. If you boast of Ibn al-Sharīd, then I have Left in Wajj a mourning after a mourning. I avenged the two of them with Ibn al-Sharīd, and he was deceived by Your protection, and he was not blameworthy. Our spears strike men of Thaqīf, And our swords wound them with every wound. Ḍamḍam b. al-Ḥārith also said: Deliver, by you, to the women of the tents a sign: Do not ever feel secure, O veiled one, from time, After the one who said to her household's neighbour: 'I would have, if the raiding party had lingered at the abode—' When she saw a man whose colour was scorched By the heat of summer, and the bones were bare, With prominent bones, you would see him at the end of his night Robed in his coat of mail for a raid, When I do not cease to be upon the saddle of a sturdy, bare-bellied Camel that brings my waist-wrapper up to the highlands— One day following the spoils, and at another time It is recorded as a struggle alongside the Anṣār, And around every thicket I destroy it, A slow pace he gives it, and every soft ground, So that I may change what is in it of need, And she wishes that I would not return, O sinful one.
