Naming those who were martyred on the day of Hunayn
Translation
✧ ʿAbbās b. Mirdās also said: O man whom a swift, sturdy she-camel with hardened hoofs carries along, when you come to the Prophet, say to him: a right is upon you when the assembly sits at ease. O best of those who have ridden mounts and of those who have walked upon the dust, when souls are counted, we have fulfilled for you what you covenanted with us, while horses are reined in by warriors and champ their bits. When from all the branches of Buhthah a host poured forth, by which the mountain passes remained choked, until we came upon the people of Makkah at dawn as a grey, gleaming mass, led by the resolute, bold champion. From every thick-necked hero of Sulaym, upon whom is a white coat of mail whose rings are tightly woven and a helmet. He gives the spear to drink when he dares into the fray, and you would think him a lion when he frowns. He charges the battalion marked with a banner, and in his hand is a sharp sword with which he cuts, and a piercing, pliant lance. And at Ḥunayn a thousand of our host fulfilled their word, a mighty, hard troop with which the Messenger was reinforced. They were a shield before the believers, while the sun that day was most blazing upon them. We advance while God guards us with His protection, and God does not let him whom He guards be lost. Truly we were detained at al-Manāqib in a detaining that God was pleased with, and it was an excellent detaining. And on the morning of Awṭās we made an onslaught that sufficed against the enemy, and it was said of it: 'O hold back!' Hawāzin calls for brotherhood between us, a dried-up breast which Hawāzin extends, until we left their host as though it were a wild ass that beasts of prey had followed and torn apart. Ibn Hishām said: Khalaf al-Aḥmar recited to me his words: 'and it was said of it: O hold back!'
