The valor of Ali and an Ansari in this battle

Translation

✧ [The poetry of Mālik b. ʿAwf about the people’s defeat] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ, when he set out toward Ḥunayn, had attached the Banū Sulaym to al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Sufyān al-Kilābī, so they were assigned to him and with him. When the people were routed, Mālik b. ʿAwf said, reciting a rajaz on his horse: Aqdim Muḥāj, indeed it is a dire day— One like me on one like you protects and attacks again, When the ranks are given up one day, and the rear! Then groups after groups gathered and rallied, Battalions before which sight grows weary. I have thrust the thrust that spurts with spearheads, When the abject, skulking one is blamed; And I thrust the wide wound that howls and snarls, From its interior a pouring, streaming spray— At times it gushes, and sometimes it bursts open— And the spear-point of the worker is broken in it. O Zayd, O son of Hamham, where do you flee? The tooth has worn out, and life has grown long. The white women with long head-coverings have known That I in the like of them am no inexperienced youth, When the guarded woman is brought out from behind the veils. And Mālik b. ʿAwf also said: Aqdim Muḥāj, indeed they are the arm-ringed ones; And let not a stray foot deceive you. Ibn Hishām said: These two verses are by someone other than Mālik b. ʿAwf, on a day other than this one.
