The valor of Ali and an Ansari in this battle

Translation

✧ [The affair of Abū Qatādah and his spoils] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me that he was told on the authority of Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī, who said: And one of our companions whom I do not suspect narrated to me, on the authority of Nāfiʿ, the client of Banū Ghifār, Abū Muḥammad, on the authority of Abū Qatādah. They both said: Abū Qatādah said: On the day of Ḥunayn I saw two men fighting one another, a Muslim and a polytheist. He said: And there was a man from the polytheists who wanted to help his polytheist companion against the Muslim. He said: I came to him and struck his hand and cut it off, and he embraced me with his other hand. By God, he did not release me until I perceived the smell of blood—or it is narrated: the smell of death, as Ibn Hishām said—and he nearly killed me. Had the blood not drained from him, he would have killed me, but he fell, and I struck him and killed him. The fighting diverted me from him, and a man from the people of Makkah passed by him and plundered him. When the war laid down its burdens and we had finished with the people, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Whoever kills a slain man, his spoils belong to him. I said: O Messenger of God, by God, I killed a slain man who had spoils, but the fighting diverted me from him, and I do not know who plundered him. A man from the people of Makkah said: He has spoken truly, O Messenger of God; the spoils of that slain man are with me, so satisfy him on my behalf from his spoils. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ said: No, by God, he will not be satisfied with that. You aim at a lion among the lions of God, fighting for the religion of God, and you would share his spoils with him? Return to him the spoils of his slain man. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: He has spoken truly. Return his spoils to him. Abū Qatādah said: So I took it from him, sold it, and with its price bought a palm-garden. It was the first property I ever acquired. Ibn Isḥāq said: One whom I do not suspect narrated to me, on the authority of Abū Salamah, on the authority of Isḥāq b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah, on the authority of Anas b. Mālik, who said: Abū Ṭalḥah alone plundered on the day of Ḥunayn twenty men.
