The Messenger's grant of safe-conduct to Ṣafwān b. Umayya
Translation
✧ [Hubayrah's persistence in his disbelief and his poetry concerning the Islam of his wife Umm Hānīʾ] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb al-Makhzūmī, he remained there until he died a disbeliever. He had been married to Umm Hānīʾ bt. Abī Ṭālib, whose name was Hind. He said, when the news of Umm Hānīʾ's Islam reached him: Did Hind stir your longing, or did her question come to you—such are separation's causes and its turning away? She has kept me sleepless at the top of a fortified stronghold in Najrān, her phantom wandering after a night. And a reproachful woman rose at night to blame me and chide me in the night—may her error go astray! She claims that if I obey my kinsfolk I shall perish; and will anything cause me to perish except parting from her? For I belong to a people whose, when their strife grows earnest, on whatever condition their state may be this morning. And I am a defender from behind my kinsfolk, when the space beneath the spear-points becomes their arena. And in their hands the swords became as if they were children's playthings, and among them are their shades. And I shall always hate the envious and their deeds: upon God is my provision, itself and my dependents. And a man's speech about what is not its true nature is like arrows falling that have no heads. If you have followed Muhammad's religion and the ties of kinship have been turned away from you, then be upon the highest remote slope of a compacted, dust-colored, dry hill whose water sources are barren. Ibn Isḥāq said: And it is also transmitted: 'and the ties of kinship have been severed from you.'
