Translation

✧ The Detachment of the Commander of the Believers, the one mutilated in the cause of Allah Almighty, ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh ؓ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb al-Asadī in Rajab, upon his return from the first Badr, in the second year, to Baṭn Nakhla. He called him when he prayed the evening prayer and said: "Meet me at dawn with your weapon; I am sending you on an expedition." He said: "I met him at dawn wearing my bow, my sword, my quiver, and with my shield. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer with the people, then departed, and found that I had preceded him, standing at his door, and I found a group of Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ubayy b. Kaʿb, and he entered upon him, and he commanded him, and he wrote a letter. Then he called me and gave me a sheet of Khawlānī leather, and said: 'I have appointed you over this group. Proceed until, when you have traveled for two nights, then look at this letter of mine, and then proceed according to what is in it.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which direction?' He said: 'Take the Najd road, heading for Rukba.' [The companions of Ibn Jaḥsh in his detachment] Ibn Isḥāq and Abū ʿAmr said: He sent with him eight men from the Muhājirūn, none of them an Anṣārī, namely: Abū Ḥudhayfa b. ʿUtba, Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, ʿUkkāsha b. Miḥṣan, ʿUtba b. Ghazwān, ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿa, Wāqid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Laythī, Khālid b. al-Bukayr, and Suhayl b. Bayḍāʾ. Ibn ʿĀʾidh mentioned among them Sahl b. Bayḍāʾ and did not mention Suhayl, nor Khālid, nor ʿUkkāsha. Ibn Saʿd mentioned among them al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr — and he is the one who captured al-Ḥakam b. Kaysān — and Ibn Saʿd said: They were twelve [from the Muhājirūn], every two of them alternating on one camel. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated with a good chain from Zirr [b. Ḥubaysh], may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, who said: "The first banner raised in Islam was the banner of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh." Note: In this expedition ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh was named Commander of the Believers, as mentioned by Ibn Saʿd and al-Quṭb, and Abū Nuʿaym affirmed that he was the first commander appointed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and what preceded from Saʿd [b. Abī Waqqāṣ] in the previous chapter supports it.
