Translation

✧ The Expedition of Buwāṭ The Messenger of God ﷺ set out to it in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, at the beginning of thirteen months from his emigration—this was said by Ibn Saʿd and others, while Abū ʿAmr and Ibn Ḥazm said: in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir—with two hundred men of the Emigrants. His banner—and it was white—was carried by Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ. As for the one he appointed as his deputy over Madinah—Ibn Saʿd said: Saʿd b. Muʿādh, while Ibn Hishām and Abū ʿAmr said: al-Sāʾib b. ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn, and the latter two were followed in that by the ʿUyūn, al-Ishārah, and al-Mawrid—he intended to intercept a caravan belonging to Quraysh, in which were Umayyah b. Khalaf and one hundred men of Quraysh along with two thousand five hundred camels. He reached Buwāṭ—Buwāṭ, with ḍammah on the bāʾ or fatḥah, and a lightening of the wāw, and with the unpointed ṭāʾ—a mountain among the mountains of Juhaynah, in the direction of Raḍwā—with fatḥah on the rāʾ and sukūn on the pointed ṣād—a mountain near Yanbuʿ, between it and Madinah there are four barīd. It is close to "Dhū Khashab" on the side facing the road to Syria. Then he returned to Madinah without encountering any fighting. He remained there for the rest of the month of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir and part of Jumādā al-Ūlā. Note: In al-Rawḍ it is said: Ibn Hishām mentioned that the one whom the Messenger of God ﷺ appointed as his deputy over Madinah was al-Sāʾib b. Maẓʿūn, and he is the brother of ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn b. Ḥabīb. Then he said: As for al-Sāʾib b. ʿUthmān, who is the nephew of this one, he was present at Badr, etc. Thus his words imply that the appointed deputy was al-Sāʾib b. Maẓʿūn, not al-Sāʾib b. ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn, but this is open to question, because what is found in the copy of the Sīrah is: al-Sāʾib b. ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn.
