✧ Mukhayrīq [His conversion, death, and bequest] Mukhayrīq al-Naḍrī al-Isrāʾīlī of Banū al-Naḍīr — and it is pronounced with a mīm bearing ḍammah, then a khāʾ with dot and fatḥah, then a yāʾ with sukūn, then a rāʾ, then a yāʾ, then a qāf — Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Aslamī mentioned that he converted to Islam. It is said that he was of Banū Qaynuqāʿ, and it is said of Banū Thaʿlabah ibn al-Fiṭyūn. Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the accounts of Mukhayrīq — he was a learned rabbi, a wealthy man with many possessions of palm trees, and he recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by his description and what he found in his knowledge, yet the familiarity of his religion prevailed over him, and he remained upon that until the day of Uḥud. The day of Uḥud was a Saturday. He said: "O assembly of Jews, by Allah, you know that the victory of Muḥammad over you is true." They said: "Today is the Sabbath." He said: "There is no Sabbath for you." Then he took his weapons and went out until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Uḥud, and he charged those behind him among his people: "If I am killed this day, my wealth is for Muḥammad ﷺ, to do with it what Allah shows him." When the people fought, he fought until he was killed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as it has reached me, used to say: "Mukhayrīq is the best of the Jews." Al-Suhaylī said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made the wealth of Mukhayrīq — which was seven orchards — endowments in al-Madinah. Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī said: It was the first endowment in al-Madinah.
