The Night Journey and the Ascension
Translation
✧ [The description of the eaters of usury] He said: Then I saw men with bellies the like of which I had never seen before, on the path of the people of Pharaoh. They pass over them like thirsty camels when they are presented to the Fire, trampling them, unable to move from their place. He said: I said: Who are these, O Jibril? He said: These are the eaters of usury. And he saw a man swimming in a river of blood, being fed stones, and he said: Who is this? He said: A consumer of usury. The fortieth note: He only saw the eaters of usury with swollen bellies because the punishment resembles the sin, for the eater of usury's belly swells just as he wished his wealth to grow by consuming what was forbidden to him, so the blessing was erased from his wealth and made into swelling in his belly until he stands as one stands whom Satan has touched with madness. And they were placed on the path of the people of Pharaoh, who pass over them morning and evening, because the people of Pharaoh are the severest of people in punishment, let alone other disbelievers, and they cannot rise. The meaning of their being on the path of Hell, where the disbelievers are made to pass over them, is that Allah, glorified and exalted be He, has suspended their affair between their desisting, which would be better for them, and their returning and persisting, which would cause Him to admit them to the Fire; and this is the description of one who is on the path to the Fire. Allah, exalted be He, said: "But whoever comes to him with an admonition from his Lord and desists, he shall have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah; but whoever returns, those are the companions of the Fire, abiding eternally therein" [Al-Baqarah: 275]. And in some hadiths it is said that he saw their bellies like houses, that is, the eaters of usury, and in them were snakes visible from outside the bellies.
