The Night Journey and the Ascension

Translation

✧ [ The Keeper of the Fire Not Smiling at the Messenger ﷺ ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the people of knowledge related to me, from one who related to him, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said: The angels received me when I entered the lowest heaven. No angel met me except smiling and rejoicing, saying good and supplicating with it, until an angel from among the angels met me. He said the like of what they said and supplicated with the like of what they supplicated with, except that he did not smile, and I did not see from him of cheerfulness the like of what I saw from others. I said to Jibrīl: O Jibrīl, who is this angel who said to me as the angels said, but did not smile at me, and I did not see from him of cheerfulness the like of what I saw from them? He said: Jibrīl said to me: Indeed, if he had smiled at anyone before you, or were to smile at anyone after you, he would have smiled at you; but he does not smile. This is Mālik, the keeper of the Fire. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I said to Jibrīl—and he is, from Allah (Exalted is He), in the station that has been described to you, obeyed there and trustworthy—Will you not command him to show me the Fire? He said: Yes. O Mālik, show Muḥammad the Fire. He said: So he uncovered its covering from it, and it boiled and rose up until I thought it would seize what I saw. He said: I said to Jibrīl: O Jibrīl, command him to return it to its place. He said: So he commanded him, and he said to it: Subside. So it returned to its place from which it had emerged. I likened its return to nothing but the falling of shade, until when it entered from where it had emerged, he replaced its covering over it. - [ Return to the Ḥadīth of al-Khudrī about the Ascension ] (And) Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī said in his ḥadīth: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When I entered the lowest heaven, I saw in it a man sitting, to whom the souls of the children of Ādam were presented. He would say of some of them, when they were presented to him, good and be pleased by it, and say: A good soul that came out of a good body. And he would say of some of them, when they were presented to him: Uff, and he would frown with his face and say: A wicked soul that came out of a wicked body. He said: I said: Who is this, O Jibrīl? He said: This is your father Ādam. The souls of his offspring are presented to him. When the soul of a believer among them passes by him, he is pleased by it and says: A good soul that came out of a good body. And when the soul of a disbeliever among them passes by him, he is disgusted by it and detests it, and that grieves him, and he says: A wicked soul that came out of a wicked body.
