The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment

Translation

✧ [The Poetry of Abū Ṭālib in Praise of the Group Who Annulled the Parchment] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the parchment was torn up and what was in it became void, Abū Ṭālib said, concerning the matter of those men who rose to annul it, praising them: : Has the deed of our Lord come to our sea-farers, Despite their distance? By God, with people He is gentle. To tell them that the parchment has been torn up, And that everything God does not approve is corrupted. Falsehood and collected magic took turns upon it, And no magic was found to ascend till the end of time. Those call together against it one who is no babbler in it, So its bird flutters about its head. It was a patch equal to a sinful one, That from it an arm and a neck-ornament be cut. And the people of the two Makkahs would depart and flee, Their flanks trembling from fear of evil. And a plowman would be left turning over his affair, Should he go down to the lowland among them, or go up to the highland? And a battalion ascends between the two mountains, With litters, arrows, a bow, and a shield. Whoever of the present people of Makkah desires his might, Our might in the belly of Makkah is more ancient. We grew up in it while people there were few, And we have not ceased to increase in goodness and we praise. And we feed until people leave their surplus, When the hands of the generous are made to tremble. May God reward a band at al-Ḥajūn who pledged allegiance, Upon a full assembly, guiding to firmness and directing aright. Sitting at the edge of al-Ḥajūn, as if they were Chiefs—nay, they are mightier and more glorious. Every falcon aided in it, As if, when he walks in the fluttering of the coat of mail, he is one with crooked legs. Bold in great affairs, as if he were a meteor in the hands of a fire-kindler, blazing. Of the noblest of Luʾayy b. Ghālib, When he is asked for disgrace, his face becomes clouded. Long of sword-belt, with half his shank exposed, On his face clouds are watered and he is made fortunate. Great of ashes, a lord and son of a lord, He urges on the hospitality for guests and gathers them. And he builds for the sons of the clan what is good, When we circle in the lands, and he makes smooth the way. Every acquitted one clung to this peace, Of great banner, whose affair is then praised. They accomplished what they accomplished in their night, then they awoke At leisure, while the rest of the people were asleep. They returned Suhayl b. Bayḍāʾ content, And Abū Bakr was delighted by it, and Muḥammad. When were the peoples associated in the whole of our affair? Before it, we had long been showing affection. And we had long not acknowledged an injustice, And we attained what we wished, and we did not act harshly. O Banū Quṣayy, is there any among your own selves for you, And have you any share in what tomorrow will bring? For I and you are as a sayer said: The clear speech is with you, if you were to speak, O black one.
