The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment

Translation

✧ [Ḥassān's poetry in mourning al-Muṭʿim, and mention of his annulling the pact] Ḥassān b. Thābit said, weeping for al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdiyy when he died, and recalling his standing in annulling the pact: : O eye, weep for the chief of the people and pour forth tears, and if you exhaust it, pour blood; and weep for the great one of both Mashʿars, for the people, a known benefactor, whenever he spoke. If one glory could endure forever among men, his glory today would make al-Muṭʿim abide. You granted protection to the Messenger of Allah from them, and they became your slaves as long as a pilgrim raises his voice in the talbiyah and enters the state of iḥrām. Were Maʿadd in its entirety asked about him, and Qaḥṭān or the remaining remnant of Jurhum, they would say: He is the one who fulfills the protection of his neighbor and his covenant on a day when one shirks. The shining sun does not rise over them upon anyone like him among them, dearer and greater, more disdainful when he disdains, and gentler in character, and more protective of a neighbor when the night grows dark. Ibn Hishām said: His saying "both of them" is from someone other than Ibn Isḥāq. [How al-Muṭʿim granted protection to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Hishām said: As for his saying "You granted protection to the Messenger of Allah from them," when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from the people of al-Ṭāʾif, and they did not answer him as he called them to believe in him and support him, he went to Ḥirāʾ. Then he sent to al-Akhnas b. Sharīq to grant him protection, and he said: "I am an ally, and an ally does not grant protection." So he sent to Suhayl b. ʿAmr, and he said: "The Banū ʿĀmir do not grant protection against the Banū Kaʿb." So he sent to al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdiyy, and he responded to that. Then al-Muṭʿim and his household armed themselves and went out until they came to the mosque, and then he sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he should enter, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, circumambulated the House, and prayed there. Then he departed to his home. That is what Ḥassān b. Thābit meant. [Ḥassān's praise of Hishām b. ʿAmr for his standing in the matter of the pact] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit (the Anṣārī) also said, praising Hishām b. ʿAmr for his standing in the matter of the pact: : Will the Banū Umayyah fulfill a covenant, a pact as the protection of Hishām fulfilled it, belonging to a group who do not betray their neighbor, for al-Ḥārith b. Ḥubayyib b. Sukhām. And when the Banū Ḥisl grant protection, they fulfill and deliver their neighbor in peace. And Hishām was one of the Sukhām (with ḍammah). Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: Sukhām.
