The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment
[ إخْبَارُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِأَكْلِ الْأَرَضَةِ لِلصَّحِيفَةِ، وَمَا كَانَ مِنْ الْقَوْمِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَذَكَرَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَبِي طَالِبٍ: يَا عَمِّ، إنَّ رَبِّي اللَّهَ قَدْ سَلَّطَ الْأَرَضَةَ عَلَى صَحِيفَةِ قُرَيْشٍ، فَلَمْ تَدَعْ فِيهَا اسْمًا هُوَ لِلَّهِ إلَّا أَثْبَتَتْهُ فِيهَا، وَنَفَتْ مِنْهُ الظُّلْمَ وَالْقَطِيعَةَ وَالْبُهْتَانَ، فَقَالَ: أَرَبُّكَ أَخْبَرَكَ بِهَذَا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ؛ قَالَ: فَوَاَللَّهِ مَا يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْكَ أَحَدٌ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إلَى قُرَيْشٍ، فَقَالَ: يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ، إنَّ ابْنَ أَخِي أَخْبَرَنِي بِكَذَا وَكَذَا، فَهَلُمَّ صَحِيفَتُكُمْ، فَإِنْ كَانَ كَمَا قَالَ ابْنُ أَخِي فَانْتَهُوا عَنْ قَطِيعَتِنَا، وَانْزِلُوا عَمَّا فِيهَا ؟ وَإِنْ يَكُنْ كَاذِبًا دَفَعْتُ إلَيْكُمْ ابْنَ أَخِي، فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ: رَضِينَا، فَتَعَاقَدُوا عَلَى ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ نَظَرُوا، فَإِذَا هِيَ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَزَادَهُمْ ذَلِكَ شَرًّا. فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ صَنَعَ الرَّهْطُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فِي نَقْضِ الصَّحِيفَةِ مَا صَنَعُوا.
Translation
✧ [The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informing about the termite eating the sheet, and what happened among the people after that] Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abū Ṭālib: O my uncle, my Lord Allah has set the termite upon the sheet of Quraysh, and it did not leave in it any name that is for Allah except that it affirmed it in it, and removed from it the wrongdoing, the severing of ties, and the slander. He said: Did your Lord inform you of this? He said: Yes. He said: By Allah, no one will get to you. Then he went out to Quraysh and said: O assembly of Quraysh, my nephew has informed me of such and such, so bring your sheet. If it is as my nephew said, then desist from cutting us off and withdraw from what is in it; and if he is lying, I will hand over my nephew to you. The people said: We accept. They made a pact upon that, then they looked, and behold, it was as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and that only increased them in evil. Thereupon the company from Quraysh did what they did in annulling the sheet.
