What passed between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the leaders of Quraysh, and something of the commentary on Surat al-Kahf

Translation

✧ What passed between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the leaders of Quraysh: Quraysh attempted repeatedly to turn the Prophet ﷺ away from his call. Among what they attempted was that a number of their leaders gathered and went to the Prophet ﷺ and offered to make him king over them if what he was calling to was for that purpose, or to marry him to whomever he wished, or to collect for him whatever wealth he wanted if what he was calling to was for the sake of wealth, or to treat him medically if he had an illness. However, the Prophet ﷺ would answer them with nothing more than his call to monotheism: "Say: there is no god but Allah, and you will prosper." They pondered their affair and sent to the People of the Book, the Jews, to ask them. They sent back to them questions whose answers no one knew except a prophet. They asked Quraysh these questions, among which was their asking about the Companions of the Cave, Dhu al-Qarnayn, the spirit, and other matters. The Prophet ﷺ answered them regarding all of that after a period of interruption of revelation that was most severe upon the Prophet ﷺ, since it was in anticipation of the answer that would be revealed to him so that he could answer the people. Despite all this, Quraysh did not believe, even though their leaders secretly desired to listen to the Qurʾān and marveled at what they heard. It took hold of their souls and stirred in them meanings that drew them to the truth, while pride in their forefathers and might in sin kept them away from it.
