The story of Idris (peace be upon him)
Translation
✧ Idrīs ﷺ His name is Khaẓūkh b. Yard b. Mahlāʾīl b. Qaynān b. Anūsh b. Shīth b. Ādam. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: He is Idrīs b. al-Yārd b. Mahlāʾīl b. Qaynān b. al-Ṭāhir b. Habhah, who is Shīth b. Ādam. He was called Idrīs because he was the first to study the written revelation. "Khaẓūkh" is with an unpointed ḥāʾ then a pointed khāʾ, and "Yardh" is with a pointed dhāl. The first word is also related with two pointed khāʾs, and "Yard" with an unpointed dāl. He is in the line of descent of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as mentioned by more than one of the scholars of genealogy. Al-Bukhārī said: It is mentioned on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd and Ibn ʿAbbās that Ilyās is Idrīs. They found support for that in what is narrated in the ḥadīth of al-Zuhrī, from Anas, regarding the Night Journey, that when he (the Prophet) passed by him ﷺ, he said to him: "Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous prophet." He did not say as Ādam and Ibrāhīm said: "Welcome to the righteous prophet and righteous son." They said: If he had been in his line of descent, he would have said to him as they both said to him. This does not necessarily indicate that, because the narrator may not have remembered it well, or perhaps he said it to him out of humility and modesty, and did not present himself in the position of fatherhood as he did to Ādam, the father of mankind, and Ibrāhīm, who is the Friend of the Most Merciful and the greatest of the Possessors of Resolve after Muḥammad, may the blessings of Allah be upon them all.
