Translation
✧ Then Ḥanūkh b. Yarda married Hūdānah—also called Adhānah—daughter of Bāwīl b. Maḥwīl b. Ḥanūkh b. Qayn b. Ādam, when he was sixty-five years old, and she bore him Matūshalakḥ b. Ḥanūkh. He lived three hundred years after Matūshalakḥ was born, then he was raised up, and Ḥanūkh appointed him as his successor over the affairs of his children and the command of God. He enjoined him and his household before he was raised up. He was the first to ride the sea, and he ruled by way of obedience to God, glorified be He. Idrīs informed them that God would punish the children of Qābīl and those who mingled with them, and he forbade them from mingling with them. He was the first to ride horses, because he followed the way of his father Ḥanūkh in striving. Then Matūshalakḥ married ʿArbā daughter of ʿAzāzīl b. Anūshīl b. Ḥanūkh b. Qayn, when he was one hundred and thirty-seven years old, and she bore him Lamak b. Matūshalakḥ. He lived seven hundred years after Lamak was born to him, and sons and daughters were born to him. Thus the entire lifespan of Matūshalakḥ was nine hundred and nineteen years. Then he died and enjoined his son Lamak. Lamak would admonish his people and forbid them from mingling with the children of Qābīl, but they did not accept until all those who were with them descended to them from the mountain. It is said that Matūshalakḥ had another son besides Lamak called Ṣābī, and after him the Ṣābiʾūn were named. I say: Maḥwīl is with an undotted ḥ, and a dotted b with two dots underneath. Qayn is with a q, and a dotted y with two dots underneath. Matūshalakḥ is with a fatḥah on the m, a dotted t with two dots above, a dotted sh, and an undotted ḥ—or, it is said, a dotted kh. Lamak b. Matūshalakḥ married Qīnūsh daughter of Birākīl b. Maḥwīl b. Ḥanūkh b. Qayn, when he was one hundred and eighty-seven years old, and she bore him Nūḥ b. Lamak, the prophet. Lamak lived five hundred and ninety-five years after the birth of Nūḥ, and sons and daughters were born to him, then he died. Nūḥ b. Lamak married ʿIzrah daughter of Birākīl b. Maḥwīl b. Ḥanūkh b. Qayn, when he was five hundred years old, and she bore him his sons Sām, Ḥām, and Yāfith, the sons of Nūḥ. The birth of Nūḥ was one hundred and twenty-six years after the death of Ādam. When he came of age, his father Lamak said to him: “You know that none remain on this mountain except us, so do not feel lonely and do not follow the sinful nation.” Ibn ʿAbbās said: Lamak begot Nūḥ, and he was eighty-two years old on the day Nūḥ was born.
