Quraysh's Building of the Kaʿbah and the Prophet's ﷺ Judgment Among Them in Placing the Stone
Translation
✧ Quraysh's Building of the Kaʿbah The reason for Quraysh's building of it was a fire that occurred in it because a woman was fumigating it, and sparks flew and fell into the cloths of the Kaʿbah, so it burned, and a flood came and increased its weakness. Some people had stolen from the Kaʿbah and plundered it, so Quraysh wanted to rebuild it and raise its door so that only those they wished would enter it. They had wood available and a skilled carpenter. There was a serpent in it that they feared, but Allah removed it from them. They spent on it and did not include in it anything from their earnings except what was good. The first to begin its demolition was al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah. Then the people waited through their night to see whether anything would befall him. When nothing befell him, they knew that Allah had approved of what they intended. The tribes of Quraysh gathered stones and began building it until, when they reached the place of the Corner, they differed over who should place the Stone in its place, until they almost fought one another. They consulted to appoint as arbiter the first person to enter the House, and that was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They accepted him because of his trustworthiness and truthfulness. He suggested to them that they bring a cloth and that each tribe take hold of a side of it, after he placed the Corner (the Black Stone) in it. Then they lifted the cloth, and he took the Corner and placed it in its place, and he ﷺ built upon it. It remained as it was built until the time of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. Also, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib saw in his sleep the place of Zamzam after Jurhum had filled it in until his time, so he renewed its digging and found in it two gazelles of gold, swords, and coats of mail. He made a door from the swords and made the gold into ornaments for the Kaʿbah, and he undertook the provision of water for the pilgrims.
