Quraysh's Building of the Kaʿbah and the Prophet's ﷺ Judgment Among Them in Placing the Stone

✧ Quraysh's Building of the Kaʿbah Their building of it was due to several matters: First: its weakening from the fire that had befallen it, namely that a woman burned incense at the Kaʿbah and a spark flew from her censer onto the cloths of the Kaʿbah, and it burned. Second: that a flood entered it and cracked its walls after its weakening. Third: that a band of men stole the ornaments of the Kaʿbah and two gazelles of gold—or, it is said, a single gazelle studded with pearls and gems, which was in a well inside the Kaʿbah—and the one with whom it was found was Duwayk, a client of Banū Mulayḥ b. ʿAmr of Khuzāʿah, and Quraysh cut off his hand. Quraysh allege that those who stole it placed it with Duwayk. So they wanted to strengthen its structure and raise its door so that none should enter it except whom they wished. The sea had cast up a ship at Jeddah belonging to a man of the Roman merchants named Bāqūm—with a bāʾ followed by a ḍammah on the qāf—and he was a builder, and it was wrecked. Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah went out with a band of Quraysh to the ship, and they bought its timber and spoke with the Roman Bāqūm, and he came with them; they took its timber and prepared it for roofing the Kaʿbah. Al-Umawī said: This ship belonged to Caesar, king of the Romans, carrying for him building materials of marble, timber, and iron. Caesar had dispatched it with Bāqūm to the church that the Persians had burned in Abyssinia; but when it reached its anchorage at Jeddah, God Most High sent a wind against it and wrecked it. Ibn Isḥāq said: There was in Makkah a Coptic man, a carpenter, and so some of what would repair it was made ready for them, in their own view. And there was a great serpent that would come out of the well of the Kaʿbah—the one into which gifts for it were thrown—and it would sun itself on the wall of the Kaʿbah, and it was among the things they feared, for no one drew near it but it shrank back, hissed, and opened its mouth; so they feared it. Al-Suhaylī related from Razīn that a thief entered the Kaʿbah in the days of Jurhum to steal its treasure, and the well collapsed upon him until they came and brought him out and took what he had taken. Then a serpent dwelled in the well, with a head like a kid's, its belly white and its back black. It remained there five hundred years, and it is the one Ibn Isḥāq mentioned. Ibn ʿUqbah said: They alleged that when it coiled around the House, its head was at its tail. Then while one day it was sunning itself on the wall of the Kaʿbah as it used to do, God Most High sent a bird that snatched it and went away with it. Quraysh said at that: "We hope that God Most High has been pleased with what we intend; we have a gentle workman, and we have timber, and God Most High has spared us the serpent."
