Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid had mentioned to Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy — and he was her paternal cousin, and he was a Christian who had studied the scriptures and acquired some of the knowledge of the people — what her servant had told her of the monk's saying, and what had been seen of him when the two angels were shading him. Waraqah said: "If this is true, O Khadījah, Muḥammad is indeed the prophet of this community. I have known that a prophet awaited for this community will appear, and this is his time," or words to that effect. Waraqah kept considering the matter slow to come, saying: "Until when?" And he said concerning that: I persisted, and I was in remembrance persistent, for a grief that long stirred sobbing, and in description from Khadījah, one after another; So long has my waiting, O Khadījah, in the hollow of the two Makkahs, upon my hope, For your account, that I may see from it an emergence; with what you told us from the saying of a priest, Of the monks — I would hate that it should turn aside: that Muḥammad will reign among us, And will overcome whoever is his disputant, and will make manifest in the lands the radiance of a light By which He will make the creation firm, lest it surge; so whoever fights him meets with loss, And whoever makes peace with him meets with success. So would that I, when that comes to pass, Might be present, and be the first of them to enter, entering into what Quraysh disliked, Even if its inhabitants clamored in its Makkah with a clamor. I hope — by that which they all disliked — To the Lord of the Throne, if they descend, an ascent. Is not the affair of baseness other than unbelief In Him who chooses the One who raised the towers? So if they remain and I remain, there will be matters At which the disbelievers clamor with a clamor. And if I perish, every youth will meet From the fates a destructive and straitened place. And Waraqah also said, in what Yūnus b. Bukayr related from Ibn Isḥāq, from him: Do you go early, or are you, in the evening, departing, while in the breast the grief of your hidden thought is kindled, For the separation of a people whose separation I do not love, as if you were leaving them after two days, departing afar, And truthful reports that told of Muḥammad, told of him, when he is absent, by a sincere adviser: The young man you sent, O best of free women, to Ghawr and to the two Najds, where the vast level lands, To the market of Buṣrā in the mounts that set out, when from the loads they were lean and heavy; He tells us of every good by his knowledge, and to the truth there are doors that have keys: That the son of ʿAbd Allāh, Aḥmad, is sent to all whom the wide valleys have gathered. And my thought of him is that he will be sent truthful, as were sent the two servants Hūd and Ṣāliḥ, And Mūsā and Ibrāhīm, until there is seen for him a splendor and a published, clear remembrance, And there follow him the living of Luʾayy and Ghālib, their youth and the gray-haired elders. If I remain until his time overtakes the people, then in him I am rejoicing in love and glad, And if not, then I, O Khadījah, know that from your land I shall be a wanderer in the wide earth. Al-Umawī added: Then a follower of the religion of Him who established the building, and He had favor over people, preponderant; And He established a firm edifice in Makkah, in which lamps glimmer in the darkness, A resort for the scattered of all the tribes; to it the swift she-camels trot, Long-necked ones like arrows from night-journeys, with thongs tied upon their pasterns. From his poetry, as cited by Abū al-Qāsim al-Suhaylī in his Rawḍ: I have sincerely advised peoples, and said to them: I am the warner, so let no one deceive you. Do not worship any god other than your Creator; and if they call you, then say: Between us is a boundary. Glory to the Lord of the Throne, glory that endures for Him; and before us glorified al-Jūdī and al-Jumud. Subjected is all that is under the heaven to Him; it is not fit that anyone should oppose His dominion. Nothing that we see persists in its cheer; the God remains, and wealth and children pass away. His treasuries availed Hurmuz not a single day, nor did ʿĀd obtain eternity, for they did not last, Nor Sulaymān, when the winds ran with him, and the jinn and humankind in their midst were rebels. Where are the kings who had, for their might, from every direction a visitor arriving to them? There is a pool, there, to be approached without lies; inevitably it will be approached one day, as they approached. Then he said: Thus Abū al-Faraj ascribed it to Waraqah. He said: And in it are verses ascribed to Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt. I say: It has been related to us from the Commander of the Faithful ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ that he would, on some occasions, cite some of these verses as evidence. And Allah knows best.
