The story of the creation of Adam (peace be upon him)
Translation
✧ The Stratagem of Iblīs against Ādam and Ḥawwāʾ in the Naming of ʿAbd al-Ḥārith On the authority of Saʿīd b. Jubayr, Mujāhid, and ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: When Ḥawwāʾ became pregnant, Iblīs came to her and said, "I caused the two of you to be expelled from the Garden. If you do not obey me, I will surely give your child two horns that will split open your belly, or I will bring him out dead." But Allah decreed that he came out dead. When she became pregnant a second time, he came to her and said to her the like of his first speech, and Allah decreed that the child came out dead. When she became pregnant a third time, he came to her and said to her the like of his speech, and she said, "And what is it you want, that we should obey you in?" He said, "Name him ʿAbd al-Ḥārith." So she did, and Allah said: They ascribed to Him partners in what He gave them. And on the authority of ʿAbd al-Malik, who said: It was said to Saʿīd b. Jubayr, "O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, did Ādam associate partners?" He said, "Allah forbid that you should say Ādam associated partners. When Ḥawwāʾ became pregnant and grew heavy, Iblīs came to her and said to her, 'Have you considered this one in your belly—from where will he come out? From your mouth, or from your nostrils, or from your ears? Have you considered, if he comes out sound and healthy and does not harm you, will you obey me concerning his name?' She said, 'Yes.' So when she gave birth, he said, 'Name him ʿAbd al-Ḥārith.' So they named him ʿAbd al-Ḥārith." And on the authority of Samurah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "When Ḥawwāʾ became pregnant and Iblīs circled around her—for no child of hers lived—he said, 'Name him ʿAbd al-Ḥārith, and he will live.' So she named him ʿAbd al-Ḥārith, and he lived." And on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, Saʿīd b. Jubayr, al-Suddī, and others, they said: Ḥawwāʾ used to give birth to children for Ādam and would dedicate them to worship—that is, she would name them ʿAbd Allāh, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and the like—and death would strike them. Then Iblīs came to her and said, "If you were to name them with names other than these, your child would live." So she bore a child and named him ʿAbd al-Ḥārith, which is the name of Iblīs, and the verse was revealed: He it is who created you from a single soul, and the following verses. This meaning has also been narrated in marfūʿ form. I say: Indeed, Allah, Exalted is He, was causing their children to die at first, and He brought this one named ʿAbd al-Ḥārith to life as a trial and a test—even though Allah, Exalted is He, knows all things without test, yet it is knowledge to which reward and punishment are not attached.
