Translation

✧ The Day of Dhū ʿAlaq It was a day on which Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah and Banū Asad met at Dhū ʿAlaq and fought a fierce and terrible battle. Rabīʿah b. Mālik b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb al-ʿĀmirī, the father of the poet Labīd, was killed in the battle, and ʿĀmir was routed. Khālid b. Naḍlah al-Asadī, his son Ḥabīb, and al-Ḥārith b. Khālid b. al-Muḍallil pursued them and pressed hard in pursuit. Before they knew it, Abū Barāʾ ʿĀmir b. Mālik came out at them from behind their backs with a small band of his companions. He said to Khālid: “O Abū Maʿqil, if you wish, you may let us pass and we will let you pass, until we can carry our wounded and bury our dead.” He said: “I will do that.” So they stood facing one another. Abū Barāʾ said to him: “Do you know what happened to Rabīʿah?” He said: “Yes, I left him slain.” He said: “Who killed him?” He said: “I struck him, and Ṣāmit b. al-Afqam finished him off.” When Abū Barāʾ heard of the killing of Rabīʿah, he and those with him charged at Khālid. Khālid and his two companions defended themselves, and they seized the weapon of Ḥabīb b. Khālid. Banū Asad caught up with them and protected and defended their companions. Al-Jumayḥ said: Ask Maʿadd about the horsemen: they were not faithful to their neighbors, nor were they safe. Qurzul carries them along, and the people listen to them, and the forelocks flutter. They galloped, and they had left Rabīʿah among those slain, when the breaths drew near. In his chest is a spear, and a burning, fierce, oppressed man convulses him with the lance. Qurzul: the horse of al-Ṭufayl, the father of ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl. Labīd said in a poem mentioning his father: And no loss among the springtime of the destitute did I suffer at Dhū ʿAlaq; so guard your modesty and be patient.
