Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ The Day of al-Sullān Abū ʿUbaydah said: The Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah were ḥums, and the ḥums are Quraysh and those who have kinship with them through birth, while the ḥums are strict in their religion. And ʿĀmir were also laqāḥ, not owing obedience to kings. When al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir became king—Kisrā Abarwīz made him king—he used to equip every year a laṭīmah, which is merchandise, to be sold at ʿUkāẓ. The Banū ʿĀmir intercepted part of what he had equipped and seized it. Al-Nuʿmān became angry at that and sent to his maternal brother, namely Wabarah b. Rūmāns al-Kalbī, and he sent to his ṣanāʾiʿ and waḍāʾiʿ—the ṣanāʾiʿ are those of the Arabs whom he had attached to himself to send on raids, and the waḍāʾiʿ are those who were like elders—and he sent to the Banū Ḍabbah b. Udd and others of the Ribāb and Tamīm, and he gathered them, and they answered him. Ḍirār b. ʿAmr al-Ḍabbī came to him with nine of his sons, all of them horsemen, and with him was Ḥubaysh b. Dulaf, who was a brave horseman. They assembled in a great army, and al-Nuʿmān equipped with them a caravan and ordered them to escort it. He said to them: “When you have finished with ʿUkāẓ and the sacred months have ended and every people have returned to their lands, then make for the Banū ʿĀmir, for they are nearby in the area of al-Sullān.” They set out and concealed their affair, saying: “We have come out so that no one may intercept the king’s laṭīmah.” When the people had finished with ʿUkāẓ, Quraysh learned of their situation, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān sent a messenger to the Banū ʿĀmir to inform them of the news. He traveled to them and told them their news, so they became wary and prepared for war and took precautions and posted scouts. ʿĀmir b. Mālik, Mulaʿib al-Asinnah, returned to lead them, and the army approached. They met at al-Sullān and fought a fierce battle. While they were fighting, Yazīd b. ʿAmr b. Khuwaylid al-Ṣaʿq looked at Wabarah b. Rūmāns, the brother of al-Nuʿmān, and his appearance pleased him, so he charged at him and captured him. When he fell into their hands, the army was on the point of fleeing, but Ḍirār b. ʿAmr al-Ḍabbī forbade them and took charge of the people’s affair, and he and his sons fought a fierce battle. When Abū Barāʾ ʿĀmir b. Mālik saw him and what he and his sons were doing to the Banū ʿĀmir, he charged at him. Abū Barāʾ was a man of strong arm. When he charged at Ḍirār, they fought, and Ḍirār fell to the ground. His sons fought to protect him until they rescued him, and he mounted again—he was an old man. When he mounted, he said: “He whom his sons delight saddens his own soul.” It became a proverb; that is, he whom his sons delight when they become men grows old and weak, and that saddens him. Abū Barāʾ kept pressing upon Ḍirār out of desire for his ransom, while his sons kept defending him. When Abū Barāʾ saw that, he said to him: “You shall die, or I shall die in your place, so refer me to a man who has a ransom.” Ḍirār pointed to Ḥubaysh b. Dulaf, who was a chief. Abū Barāʾ charged at him and captured him. Ḥubaysh was black, slender, and ugly. When he saw him thus, he thought him a slave and that Ḍirār had deceived him, and he said: “Indeed we belong to God! I sought the noblest of the people, and behold I have fallen upon ill luck!” When Ḥubaysh heard this from him, he feared that he would kill him, so he said: “O man, if you want milk”—meaning camels—“you have attained it.” He ransomed himself for four hundred camels, and the army of al-Nuʿmān was defeated. When the remnant returned to him, they told him of his brother’s capture, of Ḍirār’s taking charge of the people’s affair, and what happened to him with Abū Barāʾ. Wabarah b. Rūmāns ransomed himself for a thousand camels and a horse from Yazīd b. al-Ṣaʿq, and Yazīd became rich, whereas before he had been of slender means. Labīd said, recalling the battle-days of his people: “I am a man whose honor the root-stock of ʿĀmir has defended, Though adversaries have raged against me.” In it he says: “On the morning of Qāʿ al-Qaryatayn there came to them, With slow advance, amidst whose midst gleamed the standards, Heavy battalions, whose ram had been trained To butt the rams, as if they were stars.” His saying “Qāʿ al-Qaryatayn” means the Day of al-Sullān. (Ḥubaysh b. Dulaf: with ḍammah on the unpointed ḥāʾ, with the single-pointed bāʾ, with the two-pointed yāʾ from below, and its last letter is a pointed shīn.)
