Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ The Day of al-Raqam Abū ʿUbaydah said: ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah raided Ghaṭafān, and with the Banū ʿĀmir that day was ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl as a youth who had not yet been made chief. They reached the wadi of al-Raqam, where the Banū Murrah b. ʿAwf b. Saʿd were, and with them a group from Ashjaʿ b. Dhiʾb b. Ghaṭafān and some people from Fazārah b. Dhubyān. They were warned of the Banū ʿĀmir, and the Banū ʿĀmir charged upon them at al-Raqam, a wadi near Taḍruʿ. They met and fought a fierce battle. ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl came forward and saw a woman of Fazārah, so he asked her. She said: I am Asmāʾ bt. Nawfal al-Fazārī. It was also said: she was Asmāʾ bt. Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah. While ʿĀmir was questioning her, the defeated men of his people came out upon him, with Banū Murrah at their heels. When ʿĀmir saw that, he threw his coat of mail to Asmāʾ and fled defeated, and she returned it to him after that. Murrah pursued them, led by Sinān b. Ḥārithah b. Abī Ḥārithah al-Murrī, and the Ashjaʿīs began slaughtering every one of Banū ʿĀmir whom they captured, because of a raid Banū ʿĀmir had made upon them; that clan of Banū Ashjaʿ is called Banū Madhḥij. They slaughtered seventy men of them. ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl said, reminding Ghaṭafān and alluding to Asmāʾ: Asmāʾ asked, while she was hidden, for her sacrificial victims: had I been driven away or not I had been driven away? I shall surely seek you out with spears and mounted squadrons, and I shall surely bring the cavalry to the lava field of Ḍarghad. I shall surely come forth with Mālik and with Mālik and my brother of al-Marwarāt, the one who was never propped up. In several verses. When his poetry reached Ghaṭafān, a group among them satirized him. The Nābighah of Banū Dhubyān was absent then, with the kings of Ghassān, having fled from al-Nuʿmān. When al-Nuʿmān granted him safe-conduct and he returned, he asked his people about what they had satirized ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl with. They recited to him what they had said about him and what he had said about them. He said: You have spoken obscenely, and one like ʿĀmir should not be satirized with the like of this. Then he said, faulting ʿĀmir for mentioning a woman from among their noble ladies: If ʿĀmir has spoken out of ignorance, then the riding beast of ignorance is youth. You will surely become forbearing or vie in glory when you turn gray or when the raven turns gray. Be like your father or like Abū Barāʾ; then sound judgment and right action will be in accord with you. Let not overflowing things of arrogance carry off your forbearance, things that have no door. To the end of it. When ʿĀmir heard it, he said: I was never satirized before it.
