Translation

✧ A war between Sulaym and Shaybān Abū ʿUbaydah said: An army of Banū Sulaym went out, led by al-Naṣīb al-Sulamī, intending to raid Bakr b. Wāʾil. A man of Shaybān named Ṣulayʿ b. ʿAbd Ghanm met them, while he was in the state of iḥrām, mounted on a horse of his called al-Baḥrāʾ. He said to them: “Where are you going?” They said: “We intend to raid Banū Shaybān.” He said to them: “Wait, for I am a sincere adviser to you. Beware of Banū Shaybān, for I swear to you by God that they will come upon you with three hundred geldings, besides stallions and mares.” But they refused anything but to raid them. So Ṣulayʿ spurred his horse at full speed until he came to his people and warned them. So Shaybān mounted and prepared themselves. Then Banū Sulaym came upon them while they were ready, and they fought a fierce battle. Shaybān gained victory, Sulaym was routed, and many of them were killed. Al-Naṣīb, their leader, was taken prisoner; ʿImrān b. Murrah al-Shaybānī captured him and struck off his neck. Ṣulayʿ said: I forbade Banū Zaʿl on the morning I met them, and the army of Naṣīb, while opinions are obeyed, And I said to them: “In al-Ḥarīb and Warākis are camels grazing on al-murār, pasturing freely; But in it is death, whose flock grazes, and it was right for them to accept and be obeyed.” Whenever you come upon it, you will meet at the water Ḥārith and an army of his that fills every place.
