Translation
✧ The Day of Jadūd It was a day between Bakr b. Wāʾil and Banū Minqar of Tamīm. Of its account is that al-Ḥawfazān, whose name was al-Ḥārith b. Sharīk al-Shaybānī, had a truce between him and Banū Sulayṭ b. Yarbūʿ. He resolved to betray them and gathered Banū Shaybān, Dhuhl, and al-Lahāzim, led by Ḥumrān b. ʿAbd ʿAmr b. Bishr b. ʿAmr. Then he raided, hoping to catch Banū Yarbūʿ off guard. When he reached Banū Yarbūʿ, ʿUtayba b. al-Ḥārith b. Shihāb noticed him and called out among his people, and they placed themselves between al-Ḥawfazān and the water. He said to ʿUtba, "I see with you only your kinsmen, while I am among parties of Banū Bakr. If I prevail over you, your number is small and your enemy would become greedy toward you. If you prevail over me, you would kill only the distant ones of my clan. It was not you I intended. Would you make peace with us and take the dates we have? By God, we will never frighten Yarbūʿ again." So he took the dates they had and let them go. Bakr then marched until they raided Banū Rabīʿ b. al-Ḥārith, who is Muqāʿis, at Jadūd. He was named Muqāʿis because he held back from the alliance of Banū Saʿd. They raided them while they were left behind, and captured captives and livestock. Banū Rabīʿ sent their cry for help to Banū Kulayb, but they did not answer them. The cry reached Banū Minqar b. ʿUbayd, and they mounted in pursuit and caught up with Bakr b. Wāʾil fighting. Al-Ḥawfazān, while in the shade of a tree, was unaware until al-Ahtam b. Sumayy b. Sinān al-Minqarī stood over his head. He mounted his horse, and al-Ahtam called out, "O people of Saʿd!" and al-Ḥawfazān called out, "O people of Wāʾil!" Banū Minqar caught up and fought a fierce battle. Bakr was defeated and abandoned the captives and property, and Minqar pursued them, leaving some slain and some captive. Al-Ahtam captured Ḥumrān b. ʿAbd ʿAmr. Qays b. ʿĀṣim al-Minqarī had no concern except for al-Ḥawfazān. He pursued him on a colt, while al-Ḥawfazān was on a swift horse, and he did not catch him, though he drew near. When he feared he would escape, he thrust him with the spear in his back, and he twisted away from the thrust and escaped. Thus he was named that day al-Ḥawfazān, though another account is given. Al-Ahtam said of his capture of Ḥumrān: Death was fastened to Ḥumrān after a blue spearhead from Shurāʿa had filled him. He called, "O people of Qays!" while I claimed descent from Minqar, and I was truthful when I met in the cavalry. Sawwār b. Ḥayyān al-Minqarī said, boasting against a man of Bakr: We thrust al-Ḥawfazān with a spear-thrust that clothed him in dark blood from the belly, mixed in color. And Ḥumrān our spears forcibly brought down, so he endured a heavy fetter on his arms. What a day of truth we count it, like the day of Juwāthā, al-Nubāj, and Naytalā. God decreed that on the day when glories are apportioned, we are more entitled to them than you, so He gave and bestowed abundantly. You cannot reach the sky, nor will you find for glory that God built above you any ascent. (Minqar: with kasra on the mīm, sukūn on the nūn, and fatḥa on the qāf; Rabīʿ: with ḍamma on the rāʾ and fatḥa on the bāʾ).
