Translation
✧ The Day of Musḥulān Abū ʿUbaydah said: Rabīʿah b. Ziyād al-Kalbī raided at the head of an army of his people, and he met an army of Banū Shaybān, most of whom were Banū Abī Rabīʿah. They fought a fierce battle, and Banū Shaybān prevailed over them, routing them and inflicting a great slaughter upon them—that was the Day of Musḥulān—and they took many captives and seized what was with them. The chief of those Shaybān was Ḥayyān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays al-Muḥallamī; and it was said: their chief was Ziyād b. Marthad of Banū Abī Rabīʿah. Their poet said: Ask Rabīʿah where he alighted with his army, with the tribe of Kalb where its horsemen answered the call; On the evening when their host turned away and followed one another, And their spoils and their cloistered maidens came to us. Then al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād al-Kalbī challenged his people to a contest of glory and fought them, and they routed him. So he withdrew from them and journeyed until he alighted among Banū Shaybān, where he sought the protection of a man named Ziyād of Banū Abī Rabīʿah. Then Banū Asʿad b. Hammām killed him. Then Shaybān carried his blood-money to Kalb—two hundred camels—and they accepted it.
