Translation

✧ A Day for Shaybān against Banū Tamīm Abū ʿUbaydah said: Al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis and his brother Firās al-Tamīmiyyān—they are the two Aqraʿs—went out among Banū Mujāshiʿ of Tamīm, intending a raid upon Bakr b. Wāʾil, and with them was al-Barūk Abū Jaʿl. Then Bisṭām b. Qays al-Shaybānī and ʿImrān b. Murrah met them among Banū Bakr b. Wāʾil at Zubālah. They fought a fierce battle in which Bakr prevailed and Tamīm was routed. The two Aqraʿs, Abū Jaʿl, and many people were taken captive. The two Aqraʿs ransomed themselves from Bisṭām and covenanted with him to send the ransom, so he released them. But they went far off and did not send anything. Among the captives was a man of Yarbūʿ. Bisṭām b. Qays heard him at night saying: May a tender mother be my ransom; she would be as one worn out by sicknesses. If only she knew—then her heart would be stilled—that I have fallen to the generous youth. Indeed the one whose return she hopes for there has fallen; the evening has dropped him upon Bisṭām. The evening has dropped him upon one living in ease, generous of hands, one who returns again to boldness. When Bisṭām heard that from him, he said to him, “By your father, none but you shall tell your mother of you!” And he released him. Ibn Rumayḍ al-ʿAnazī said: Gifts came from the Merciful, sent forth, until they were made to kneel at the tents of Bisṭām. The army of al-Hudhayl and the army of the two Aqraʿs together, and the throng of horses and herds, in one year. He marked his horses; his squadrons ran upon the forelocks of the sons of Hammām. Aws b. Ḥajar said: And morning brought us a long-built disgrace by which we are reviled as long as a star shines in the horizon. I have not seen a day with more weepers, nor a face in which sorrow appears and travels. They took al-Barūk and Ibn Ḥābis forcibly, and there remained for them upon the open ground a scorching day. And indeed Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ in the heat of battle, when the heroes turn aside, is a tried lion. Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ is Bisṭām b. Qays. The poets said much on this day in praise of Bisṭām b. Qays; we have omitted mention of it for brevity. (Ḥajar: with fatḥah on the ḥāʾ and the jīm).
