✧ The Day of Mabāʾiḍ It belongs to Shaybān against Banū Tamīm. Abū ʿUbaydah said: Ṭarīf b. Tamīm al-ʿAnbarī al-Tamīmī performed the pilgrimage. He was a large man, nicknamed Mujaddiʿan, and he was the horseman of his people. Ḥamṣīṣah b. Jandal al-Shaybānī, of the Banū Abī Rabīʿah, met him — a strong, brave young man — while he was circumambulating the House. He looked at him for a long time, so Ṭarīf said to him: “Why do you fix your gaze on me?” Ḥamṣīṣah said: “I want to fix you in my memory, so that perhaps I may meet you in an army and kill you.” Ṭarīf said: “O Allah, do not let the year turn until I meet him!” And Ḥamṣīṣah made a similar supplication. Ṭarīf said: Is it that every time a tribe comes to ʿUkāẓ, they send their scout to me to take note of me? Do not deny me; indeed I am that one, with my weapon at the ready, and in misfortunes I am known. Around me are horsemen of Usayd, brave ones, And of al-Hajīm, and around my tent are disputants. Beneath me is al-Agharr, and over my skin is a coat of mail, A double coat that turns back the sword, though it is notched — And further verses. Then, between the Banū Abī Rabīʿah b. Dhuhl b. Shaybān and the Banū Murrah b. Dhuhl b. Shaybān there was discord and dispute, so they fought a little fighting, but there was no bloodshed between them. Hāniʾ b. Masʿūd, the chief of the Banū Abī Rabīʿah, said to his people: “I dislike that evil should worsen between us,” so he set out with them and encamped at a watering place called Mabāʾiḍ, which is near the waters of Banū Tamīm. They stayed there for months. Their news reached Banū Tamīm, and they sent word to one another and said: “This is a solitary clan; if you annihilate them, you will weaken Bakr b. Wāʾil.” They gathered and marched under three chiefs: Abū al-Jadʿāʾ al-Ṭahwī over the Banū Ḥanẓalah, Ibn Fadkā al-Minqarī over the Banū Saʿd, and Ṭarīf b. Tamīm over the Banū ʿAmr b. Tamīm. When they drew near the Banū Abī Rabīʿah, the news reached them, and they prepared for battle. Hāniʾ b. Masʿūd addressed them and urged them to fight, saying: “When they come to you, fight them for a while, then withdraw from them. When they become occupied with plunder, return to them, and you will get what you need from them.” Banū Tamīm attacked them in the morning, but the people were on their guard. They fought a fierce battle, and Banū Shaybān did what Hāniʾ commanded them. Tamīm became occupied with spoil, and a man of theirs passed by a young son of Hāniʾ b. Masʿūd, seized him, and said: “This is enough spoil for me,” and went on with him, while Tamīm remained with the spoil and captives. Then Shaybān returned upon them and routed them, killing them and taking them captive as they pleased. Tamīm had never suffered the like of it, and only a few of them escaped, and no one turned to help another. Ṭarīf fled, and Ḥamṣīṣah pursued him and killed him. Shaybān recovered their families and property, and in addition took what the enemy had with them. Hāniʾ b. Masʿūd ransomed his son for a hundred camels. One of Shaybān said of this day: You called, Ṭarīf, the call of an ignorant, deceived man, while you were in a sight that could not be known. You came to a clan whose place in wars is such that the army is put to flight by the name of their father. You found them guarding around their abodes, bold; when the horsemen circled, they advanced. And when they were called by Abī Rabīʿah, they came on with a squadron like stars, gathering together. They demanded of you your coat of mail and al-Agharr, both of them, and the Banū Usayd abandoned you, and Khuṣam. And ʿAmr b. Sawād said, mourning Ṭarīf: Do not perish, O best of ʿAmr b. Jundab; By my life, whoever visits the graves will surely perish. Great was the ash of his fire; he was not frowning, nor did he make one despair of it when he kindled it. He was not one to stand still when the horses held back, and he was not a glutton when he stripped for battle.
