The story of the creation of Adam (peace be upon him)
Translation
✧ The duration of Adam's stay ﷺ in the Garden Abū al-ʿĀliyah said: He stayed in the Garden for five hours. We have narrated that he was created at the end of the day on Friday, so according to this, it would be in the last hour. He remained as a body for forty years of its years. His stay in heaven after his formation in the Garden until he committed the sin and was sent down was forty-three years and four months. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said: The hour that Adam remained in the Garden was the equivalent of one hundred and forty of your years. Al-Awzāʿī said, from Ḥassān, who is Ibn ʿAṭiyyah: Adam remained in the Garden for one hundred years, and in another narration, sixty years. He wept over the Garden for seventy years, over his sin for seventy years, and over his son when he was killed for forty years. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it. It was also said: His stay was three hours of it. If the one who said this meant that he dwelt in Paradise for two hours that had passed from Friday of the days of this world, which are as they are today, then his statement is not far from correctness, because the reports were as such from the predecessors among the people of knowledge: that Adam was created in the last hour of the sixth day, whose day is equivalent to a thousand years of our years. It is known that one hour of that day is eighty-three of our years. We have mentioned that Adam, after our Lord kneaded his clay, remained before the spirit was breathed into him for forty years, and that no doubt refers to our years. Then after the spirit was breathed into him until his affair was completed, and he was settled in the Garden, and sent down to the earth, it is not implausible that the duration of that from our years was about thirty-five years. But if he meant that he dwelt in the Garden for two hours that had passed from the daytime of Friday of the days whose day is equivalent to a thousand years of our years, then he said something untrue, because everyone who has a statement on that from the people of knowledge says that the spirit was breathed into him at the end of the daytime of Friday before sunset. Abū Ṣāliḥ narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās that Adam's stay in the Garden was half a day, which was equivalent to five hundred years. This too contradicts what the reports have conveyed from the Prophet ﷺ and from the scholars.
