Translation

✧ Then afterwards the kingdom passed to Ḥassān b. Tibbān Asʿad; he was the brother of al-Yamāma al-Zarqāʾ, who was crucified at the gate of the town of Jaww, and so from that day it was named al-Yamāma. Ibn Isḥāq said: When his son Ḥassān b. Abī Karib Tibbān Asʿad became king, he marched with the people of Yemen, intending to tread with them the land of the Arabs and the land of the non-Arabs. When they were in part of the land of Iraq, Ḥimyar and the tribes of Yemen disliked the march with him and wanted to return to their lands and their families. They spoke to a brother of his called ʿAmr—who was with him in his army—and said to him: "Kill your brother Ḥassān, and we will make you king over us, and you will return with us to our lands." He answered them, and they agreed upon that, except Dhū Ruʿayn al-Ḥimyarī, for he forbade ʿAmr from that, but he did not accept it from him. So Dhū Ruʿayn wrote a note containing these two verses: Will no one buy sleeplessness with sleep? Blessed is he who passes the night with a cool eye. As for Ḥimyar, they betrayed and were faithless, so the excuse of God is for Dhū Ruʿayn. Then he entrusted it to ʿAmr. When ʿAmr killed his brother Ḥassān and returned to Yemen, sleep was withheld from him, and sleeplessness was imposed upon him. He asked the physicians and the diviners among the soothsayers and fortune-tellers about his condition. It was said to him: "By God, no man ever killed his brother or his kinsman out of transgression but his sleep departed and sleeplessness was imposed upon him." Thereupon he began to kill everyone who had commanded him to kill his brother. When he came to Dhū Ruʿayn, he said to him: "I have an exculpation with you." He said: "What is it?" He said: "The note that I handed to you." He brought it out, and behold, in it were the two verses. So he left him, and he saw that he had counseled him sincerely. Then ʿAmr perished, and the affair of Ḥimyar fell into disorder, and they dispersed.
