Translation

✧ The Leap of Lakhniʿah Dhū Shanātir upon the Kingdom of Yemen He ruled it for twenty-seven years. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then a man from Ḥimyar who was not from the royal houses leapt upon them, called Lakhniʿah Yanūf Dhū Shanātir, and he killed their best men and toyed with the houses of the people of the kingdom among them. Along with that he was a dissolute man who practiced the deed of the people of Lot. He used to send for a boy from the sons of the kings and fall upon him in an upper room of his that he had made for that purpose, so that he would not rule after that. Then he would look out from that upper room of his to his guards and those of his soldiers who were present, having taken a toothstick and placed it in his mouth—that is, to let them know that he had finished with him. This continued until he sent for Zurʿah Dhū Nuwās b. Tibbān Asʿad, the brother of Ḥassān, who had been a small boy when his brother Ḥassān was killed; then he grew into a handsome, comely young man of good bearing and intelligence. When his messenger came to him, he knew what he wanted from him, so he took a small, sharp iron knife and hid it between his feet and his sandal, then went to him. When he was alone with him, he leapt at him, and Dhū Nuwās sprang at him and stabbed him until he killed him. Then he cut off his head and placed it in the aperture from which he used to look out, and placed his toothstick in its mouth, then went out to the people. They said to him: "Dhū Nuwās, is it moist or dry?" He said: "Ask Nukhmās. Isturṭubān Dhū Nuwās, isturṭubān, no harm." Then they looked at the aperture, and there was the severed head of Lakhniʿah. So they went out in pursuit of Dhū Nuwās until they caught up with him and said: "No one but you ought to rule us, since you have relieved us of this wicked one." So they made him king over them, and Ḥimyar and the tribes of Yemen gathered around him. He was the last of the kings of Ḥimyar, and he called himself Yūsuf. He remained in his kingdom for some time.
