Translation
✧ An account of the death of ʿAbd Allāh The author of the book said: ʿAbd Allāh was born when twenty-four years had passed of the reign of Kisrā Anūshirwān. He reached seventeen years of age, then married Āminah. When she became pregnant with the Messenger of God ﷺ, he died. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us, saying: Abū Muḥammad al-Jawharī informed us, saying: Ibn Khaythamah informed us, saying: Aḥmad b. Maʿrūf informed us, saying: al-Ḥārith b. Abī Usāmah informed us, saying: Muḥammad b. Saʿd informed us, saying: Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. Wāqid informed us, saying: Mūsā b. ʿUbaydah al-Rabadhī narrated to me, from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, who said: Saʿīd b. Abī Zayd informed us, from Ayyūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah. Both of them said: ʿAbd Allāh went out to Syria, to Gaza, in a caravan among the caravans of Quraysh carrying merchandise. They finished their trading, then turned back, and passed by al-Madīnah while ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was ill that day. He said: "I will stay behind with my maternal uncles, the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār." He stayed with them ill for a month, while his companions went on and arrived in Makkah. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib asked them about ʿAbd Allāh, and they said: "We left him behind with his maternal uncles, the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, and he is ill." He said: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib sent his eldest son, al-Ḥārith, to him. He found that he had died and was buried in the house of al-Nābighah, a man of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, in the house which, when you enter it, the small house is on your left. His maternal uncles informed him of his illness, their care for him, the matters they undertook on his behalf, and that they had buried him. He returned to his father and informed him. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and his brothers and sisters grieved for him intensely. The Messenger of God ﷺ was then a fetus, and ʿAbd Allāh was twenty-five years old on the day he died. Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd Allāh left behind Umm Ayman, five camels that grazed on arāk trees – meaning they ate arāk – and a flock of sheep. The Messenger of God ﷺ inherited that. Umm Ayman used to nurse him, and her name was Barakah. Its author said: We have narrated from al-Zuhrī that ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib sent his son ʿAbd Allāh to al-Madīnah to buy dates for him, and he died. There is disagreement about the death of his father ʿAbd Allāh: whether he died while the Messenger of God ﷺ was a fetus, or whether he died after his birth. There are two opinions. The sounder of them is that he died while the Messenger of God ﷺ was a fetus. The second is that he died seven months after his birth.
