Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
ذِكْرُ أمهات الرسول ﷺ أُمَّهَاتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَاقِي الْبَزَّازُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ النَّحْوِيُّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عُمَرَ بْنُ حَيَّوَيْهِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ الْكَلْبِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: أُمُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ آمِنَةُ بِنْتُ وَهْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافِ بْنِ زُهْرَةَ بْنِ كِلَابِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ، وَأُمُّهَا: بَرَّةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الدَّارِ بْنِ قُصَيِّ بْنِ كِلَابٍ، وَأُمُّهَا: أُمُّ حَبِيبٍ بِنْتُ أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى بْنِ قُصَيِّ بْنِ كِلَابٍ، وَأُمُّهَا: بَرَّةُ بِنْتُ عَوْفِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُوَيْجِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ لُؤَيِّ، وَأُمُّهَا: قِلَابَةُ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ حُبَاشَةَ، وَأُمُّهَا: أُمَيْمَةُ بِنْتُ مَالِكِ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ لِحْيَانَ، وَأُمُّهَا دُبُّ بِنْتُ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ تَمِيمِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، [وَأُمُّهَا: عَاتِكَةُ بِنْتُ غَاضِرَةَ بْنِ حُطَيْطِ بْنِ جُشَمِ بْنِ ثَقِيفٍ ]. وَأُمُّهَا لَيْلَى بِنْتُ عَوْفٍ. وَأُمُّ وَهْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافِ بْنِ زُهْرَةَ جَدِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ اسْمُهَا: قَيْلَةُ، وَيُقَالُ: هِنْدُ بِنْتُ أَبِي قَيْلَةَ، وَهُوَ وَجْزُ بْنُ غَالِبِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ مِلْكَانَ، وَأُمُّهَا: سَلْمَى بِنْتُ لُؤَيِّ بْنِ غَالِبِ بْنِ فِهْرِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، وَأُمُّهَا: مَاوِيَّةُ بِنْتُ كَعْبٍ، وَأُمُّ وَجْزِ بْنِ غَالِبٍ: السَّلَامَةُ بِنْتُ وَاهِبِ بْنِ الْبُكَيْرِ، وَأُمُّهَا: بِنْتُ قَيْسِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، وَأُمُّ عَبْدِ مَنَافِ بْنِ زُهْرَةَ جُمْلُ بِنْتُ مَالِكٍ، وَأُمُّ زُهْرَةَ بْنِ كِلَابٍ أُمُّ قُصَيٍّ، وَهِيَ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ سَعْدِ بْنِ سَيَلٍ. قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ: كَتَبْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ خَمْسَمِائَةِ أُمٍّ فَمَا وَجَدْتُ فِيهِنَّ سِفَاحًا وَلَا شَيْئًا مِمَّا كَانَ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ . ". نسبة قريش النبي ﷺ إلى أبي كبشة أَنْبَأَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرِ بْنُ الْمُسْلِمَةِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْمُخَلِّصُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ دَاوُدَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ قَالَ: وَلَدَ عَبْدُ مَنَافِ بْنُ زَهْرَةَ وَهْبًا، وَهُوَ جَدُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَبُو آمِنَةَ، وَأُمُّهُ: قَيْلَةُ بِنْتُ قَيْلَةَ، وَاسْمُ أَبِي قَيْلَةَ: وَجْزُ بْنُ غَالِبِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ [وَهُوَ غُبْشَانُ]، وَوَجْزٌ هُوَ: أَبُو كَبْشَةَ الَّذِي كَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ تَنْسُبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَهُ، لِأَنَّهُ جَدُّهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ أُمِّهِ، وَالْعَرَبُ تَظُنُّ أَنَّ أَحَدًا لَا يَعْمَلُ شَيْئًا لَا يُعْرَفُ مَنْزَعُهُ شَبَهَهُ، فَلَمَّا خَالَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ دِينَ قُرَيْشٍ قَالَ مُشْرِكُو قُرَيْشٍ نَدْعُوهُ أَبَا كَبْشَةَ، لِأَنَّ أَبَا كَبْشَةَ خَالَفَ النَّاسَ بِعِبَادَةِ الشِّعْرَى، وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ عَبَدَ الشِّعْرَى، وَكَانَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الشِّعْرَى يَقْطَعُ السَّمَاءَ عَرْضًا وَلَا أَرَى فِي السَّمَاءِ شَمْسًا وَلَا قَمَرًا وَلَا نَجْمًا يَقْطَعُ السَّمَاءَ عَرْضًا غَيْرَهَا، وَالْعَرَبُ تُسَمِّيهَا: الْعُبُورَ، لِأَنَّهَا تَعْبُرُ السَّمَاءَ عَرْضًا وَكَانَ أَبُو كَبْشَةَ سَيِّدًا فِي خُزَاعَةَ لَمْ يُعَيِّرُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ نَقْصٍ كَانَ فِيهِ، وَلَكِنْ لَمَّا خَالَفَ دِينَهُمْ نَسَبُوهُ إِلَى خِلَافِ أَبِي كَبْشَةَ، فَقَالُوا: خَالَفَ كَمَا خَالَفَ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the mothers of the Messenger ﷺ, the mothers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī al-Bazzāz informed us, saying: Abū Muḥammad al-Naḥwī informed us, saying: Abū ʿUmar b. Ḥayyawayh informed us, saying: Aḥmad b. Maʿrūf informed us, saying: al-Ḥārith b. Abī Usāmah informed us, saying: Muḥammad b. Saʿd narrated to us, saying: Hishām b. Muḥammad b. al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī informed us, on the authority of his father, who said: The mother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is Āminah bt. Wahb b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah b. Kilāb b. Murrah, and her mother is: Barrah bt. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb, and her mother is: Umm Ḥabīb bt. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb, and her mother is: Barrah bt. ʿAwf b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUwayj b. ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, and her mother is: Qilābah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Mālik b. Ḥubāshah, and her mother is: Umaymah bt. Mālik b. Ghanm b. Liḥyān, and her mother is Dubb bt. Thaʿlabah b. al-Ḥārith b. Tamīm b. Saʿd, [and her mother is: ʿĀtikah bt. Ghāḍirah b. Ḥuṭayṭ b. Jusham b. Thaqīf]. And her mother is Laylā bt. ʿAwf. And the mother of Wahb b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah, the grandfather of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, her name is Qaylah, and it is said: Hind bt. Abī Qaylah, and he is Wajz b. Ghālib b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAmr b. Milkān, and her mother is: Salmā bt. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr b. Mālik, and her mother is: Māwiyyah bt. Kaʿb, and the mother of Wajz b. Ghālib is: al-Salāmah bt. Wāhib b. al-Bukayr, and her mother is: the daughter of Qays b. Rabīʿah, and the mother of ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah is Juml bt. Mālik, and the mother of Zuhrah b. Kilāb is the mother of Quṣayy, and she is Fāṭimah bt. Saʿd b. Sayal. Muḥammad b. al-Sāʾib said: I wrote down for the Prophet ﷺ five hundred mothers and found among them no fornication nor anything of the affairs of the Age of Ignorance. ". The relation of Quraysh of the Prophet ﷺ to Abū Kabshah Al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb informed us, saying: Abū Jaʿfar b. al-Muslimah informed us, saying: Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhalliṣ informed us, saying: Aḥmad b. Salmān b. Dāwūd informed us, saying: al-Zubayr b. Bakkār narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah begot Wahb, and he is the grandfather of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the father of Āminah, and his mother is: Qaylah bt. Qaylah, and the name of Abū Qaylah is: Wajz b. Ghālib b. ʿĀmir b. al-Ḥārith [and he is Ghubshān], and Wajz is: Abū Kabshah to whom Quraysh used to relate the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, because he is his grandfather on his mother's side, and the Arabs thought that no one does anything whose origin is unknown without resembling it, so when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opposed the religion of Quraysh, the polytheists of Quraysh said: we call him Abū Kabshah, because Abū Kabshah opposed the people by worshipping Sirius, and he was the first to worship Sirius, and he used to say: Sirius cuts across the sky, and I do not see in the sky any sun or moon or star that cuts across the sky other than it, and the Arabs called it al-ʿUbūr, because it crosses the sky across, and Abū Kabshah was a chief in Khuzāʿah, and they did not reproach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for any deficiency in him, but when he opposed their religion they related him to the opposition of Abū Kabshah, and they said: he opposed as he opposed.
