Translation

✧ [The Children of ʿAdnān] Ibn Isḥāq said: From ʿAdnān the tribes of the offspring of Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm (peace be upon them) branched out. ʿAdnān begot two sons: Maʿadd b. ʿAdnān and ʿAkk b. ʿAdnān. [The Abode of ʿAkk] Ibn Hishām said: ʿAkk settled in the land of Yemen. That is because ʿAkk married among the Ashʿarīs and stayed among them, so the land and the language became one. The Ashʿarīs are the Banū Ashʿar b. Nabt b. Udad b. Zayd b. Humaysiʿ b. ʿAmr b. ʿArīb b. Yashjub b. Zayd b. Kaḥlān b. Sabaʾ b. Yashjub b. Yaʿrub b. Qaḥṭān. It is also said: Ashʿar is Nabt b. Udad. And it is said: Ashʿar is the son of Mālik. And Mālik is Madhḥij b. Udad b. Zayd b. Humaysiʿ. And it is said: Ashʿar is the son of Sabaʾ b. Yashjub. Abū Muḥriz Khalaf al-Aḥmar and Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me from ʿAbbās b. Mirdās, one of the Banū Sulaym b. Manṣūr b. ʿIkrimah b. Khaṣafah b. Qays b. ʿAylān b. Muḍar b. Nizār b. Maʿadd b. ʿAdnān, boasting of ʿAkk: And ʿAkk b. ʿAdnān, those who were surnamed Ghassān, until they were driven away to every place of banishment This verse is in a poem of his. Ghassān is a spring at the dam of Maʾrib in Yemen, which was a watering place for the offspring of Māzin b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth, so they were named after it. It is also said: Ghassān is a spring at al-Mushallal near al-Juḥfah, and those who drank from it and were named after it are tribes of the offspring of Māzin b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth b. Nabt b. Mālik b. Zayd b. Kaḥlān b. Sabaʾ b. Yashjub b. Yaʿrub b. Qaḥṭān. Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī said — and the Anṣār are the Banū al-Aws and al-Khazraj, the two sons of Ḥārithah b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Ḥārithah b. Imriʾ al-Qays b. Thaʿlabah b. Māzin b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth: If you ask, then we are a noble band, the lion is our lineage, and the water is Ghassān This verse is among verses of his. The people of Yemen said: And some of ʿAkk — and they are those in Khurasan, among them — are ʿAkk b. ʿAdnān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth, and it is said: ʿUdthān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth.
