Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ أَوْلَادُ إلْيَاسَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَوَلَدَ إلْيَاسُ بْنُ مُضَرَ ثَلَاثَةَ نَفَرٍ: مُدْرِكَةَ بْنَ إلْيَاسَ، وَطَابِخَةَ بْنَ إلْيَاسَ، وَقَمْعَةَ بْنَ إلْيَاسَ، وَأُمُّهُمْ خِنْدِفُ، امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ الْيَمَنِ. وَوُلِدَ لِقَمْعَةَ لُحَيٌّ، وَوُلِدَ لَهُ: عَمْرٌو، وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ غَيَّرَ دِينَ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ دِينَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ نَصَبَ الْأَوْثَانَ حَوْلَ الْكَعْبَةِ، وَجَعَلَ الْبَحِيرَةَ، وَالسَّائِبَةَ، وَالْوِصَايَةَ، وَالْحَامَ، وَاسْتِخْرَاجَ إِسَافَ وَنَائِلَةَ فَنَصَبَهُمَا. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: أُرِيتُ النَّارَ فَإِذَا فِيهَا عَمْرُو وَلَدُ لُحَيٍّ يَتَأَذَّى أَهْلُ النَّارِ بِرِيحِهِ وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ غَيَّرَ دِينَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَرَأَيْتُهُ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ ". وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ: قَدِمَ عَمْرُو بْنُ لُحَيٍّ بِهُبَلَ مِنَ الشَّامِ فَنَصَبَهُ عَلَى الْأَخْشَبِ، وَأَمَرَ النَّاسَ بِعِبَادَتِهِ، وَأَخْرَجَ إِسَافًا وَنَائِلَةَ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ فَنَصَبَ إِسَافًا مُقَابِلَ الرُّكْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ وَبَيْنَ زَمْزَمَ، وَنَصَبَ نَائِلَةَ إِلَيْهِ جَانِبَ الْبَيْتِ وَتُجَاهَ الْمَقَامِ، وَنَصَبَ بِمِنًى سَبْعَةَ أَصْنَامٍ، وَنَصَبَ مَنَاةَ عَلَى سَاحِلِ الْبَحْرِ، وَاتَّخَذَ لِلْعُزَّى بِنَخْلَةَ بَيْتًا يَطُوفُونَ بِهِ كَطَوَافِهِمْ بِالْكَعْبَةِ، فَكَانُوا إِذَا طَافُوا بِالْبَيْتِ لَمْ يَحِلُّوا حَتَّى يَأْتُوا الْعُزَّى، فَيَطُوفُونَ بِهِ
Translation
✧ [The Children of Ilyās] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ilyās b. Muḍar fathered three persons: Mudrikah b. Ilyās, Ṭābikhah b. Ilyās, and Qamaʿah b. Ilyās. Their mother was Khindif, a woman from Yemen. To Qamaʿah was born Luḥayy, and to him was born ʿAmr, who was the first to change the religion of al-Ḥanīfiyyah, the religion of Ibrāhīm, and the first to set up idols around the Kaʿbah, and who instituted the baḥīrah, the sāʾibah, the waṣīlah, and the ḥām, and who brought out Isāf and Nāʾilah and set them up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I was shown the Fire, and behold, in it was ʿAmr, the son of Luḥayy, the people of the Fire being harmed by his stench. He was the first to change the religion of Ibrāhīm, and I saw him dragging his intestines in the Fire." Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ said: ʿAmr b. Luḥayy brought Hubal from Syria and set it up on al-Akhshab, and commanded the people to worship it. He brought out Isāf and Nāʾilah from the House and set up Isāf opposite the Black Stone and between Zamzam, and set up Nāʾilah beside it on the side of the House and opposite the Maqām. He set up at Minā seven idols, and set up Manāh on the seashore. He took for al-ʿUzzā at Nakhlah a house around which they circumambulated as they circumambulated the Kaʿbah. When they circumambulated the House, they would not leave the state of iḥrām until they came to al-ʿUzzā and circumambulated it.
