Translation

✧ Ibn Ilyās Ilyās: with a connecting hamzah that is pronounced with fatḥah when beginning and elided otherwise. The lām in it is for definition; and it has been said: to indicate the attribute. It is derived from al-yaʾs, which is the opposite of hope; al-Suhaylī deemed this sound. Ibn al-Anbārī said: with a disconnecting hamzah in both connection and beginning. There is disagreement about its derivation. It has been said: from their saying: a man alyas, meaning the brave one who does not flee. Al-Balādhurī said: al-Athram informed me from Abū ʿUbaydah, who said: consumption and emaciation are called al-yaʾs. The poet said: It is al-yaʾs or the disease of mad love that has afflicted me; so beware of me—may what is in me never be in you. He said: Ilyās may also be derived from their saying: so-and-so is alyas, meaning extremely bold, advancing, firm of heart in wars. Al-ʿAjjāj said: Alyas, walking forward when he remembers the good the steadfast one promised, he is steadfast. He said: al-Athram said: Khālid b. Kulthūm related: the lion is alyas. He said: alyas, clearly possessing al-layas. The plural of alyas is alyās. Other things have also been said. He was given the kunyah Abū ʿAmr. His mother was al-Rabāb bt. Ḥaydah b. Maʿadd; and it has been said: she was al-Ḥanfāʾ bt. Iyād b. Maʿadd b. ʿAdnān. Abū al-Rabīʿ transmitted this from al-Zubayr. And it has been said: a Jurhumite woman. Ibn Hishām mentioned this but did not name her. Ibn al-Zubayr said: When Ilyās came of age, he disapproved of what the Banū Ismāʿīl had changed of the practices and ways of their forefathers. His merit over them became evident; his judgment united them, and they were pleased with him. He restored them to the practices of their forefathers. The Arabs continued to hold him in the esteem due to people of wisdom, as they held Luqmān and his like. Ibn Diḥyah, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: He was his father's executor. He was of surpassing beauty. Al-Suhaylī said: It is mentioned from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "Do not revile Ilyās, for he was a believer." End quote. Further clarification of this will come in the account of Muḍar. It is mentioned that the talbiyah of the Prophet ﷺ for the ḥajj could be heard from his loins. He was the first to offer sacrificial camels to the House. Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ said this.
