Translation

✧ Ibn Khuzaymah Khuzaymah: with a ḍammah on the dotted khāʾ and a fatḥah on the zāy, transferred from the diminutive of khazmah with a fatḥah on the khāʾ and a sukūn on the zāy, and it was said from the diminutive of khizmah with a kasrah on the khāʾ. According to the first, there is disagreement about what al-khazmah is. It was said that it is: the singular of al-khazm, which is like al-dawm except that it is shorter, broader, and thicker, and it has spathes and unripe dates that turn black when they ripen, because it is small and compact; from its fronds ropes are made, and from its lower parts beehives are made, and it has fruit that people do not eat, but crows are fond of it and find it pleasant. This was said by Abū Ḥanīfah al-Dīnawarī, may God Almighty have mercy on him. And it was said: al-khazmah is the leaf of the wild palm. This was reported by al-Zajjāj, may God Almighty have mercy on him. And it was said that it is a verbal noun denoting a single instance of al-khazm, which is tying something and repairing it. This was reported by al-Suhaylī. And it was said that it is only from al-khazm, which is from doubt; one says a strap that is makhzūm and mashkūk. This was also reported by al-Zajjājī. According to the second, al-khizāmah, it was said, is a nose ring in the camel's nose by which the halter is tied. And it was said that it is only the ring placed in the camel's nose of hair and the like. He said in "al-Ghurar al-Muḍīyah": I have not seen anyone who addressed the reason for the appropriateness of the transfer from what was mentioned, but it may be said that transfer does not observe that, unlike nicknames. He was given the kunyah Abū Asad. His mother was Salmā bt. Aslam b. al-Ḥāf b. Quḍāʿah, and it was said Salmā bt. Asad b. Rabīʿah. He had over people noble qualities and virtues in the number of time until it was said of him: As for Khuzaymah, noble qualities are abundant; they preceded him while there is no attendant there. Ibn Ḥabīb narrated with a sound chain from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ who said: Khuzaymah died upon the religion of Ibrāhīm, upon him be blessings and peace.
