Translation
✧ [ The Children of Kinānah and Their Mothers ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Kinānah b. Khuzaymah had four children: al-Naḍr b. Kinānah, Mālik b. Kinānah, ʿAbd Manāt b. Kinānah, and Malkān b. Kinānah. The mother of al-Naḍr was Barrah bt. Murr b. Udd b. Ṭābikhah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar, and the rest of his sons were by another woman. Ibn Hishām said: The mother of al-Naḍr, Mālik, and Malkān was Barrah bt. Murr; and the mother of ʿAbd Manāt was Hālah bt. Suwayd b. al-Ghiṭrīf from Azd Shanūʾah. And Shanūʾah is ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik b. Naṣr b. al-Asad b. al-Ghawth. They were only called Shanūʾah because of the shanʾān (enmity) that was between them. Al-shanʾān means hatred. Ibn Hishām said: Al-Naḍr is Quraysh; so whoever is of his progeny is a Qurayshī, and whoever is not of his progeny is not a Qurayshī. Jarīr b. ʿAṭiyyah, one of the Banū Kulayb b. Yarbūʿ b. Ḥanẓalah b. Mālik b. Zayd Manāt Tamīm b. Yandāḥ, praised Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, saying: : What mother gave birth to Quraysh, neither ignoble of lineage nor barren, and what a stallion more noble than your father, and what maternal uncle more generous than Tamīm. He means Barrah bt. Murr, the sister of Tamīm b. Murr, the mother of al-Naḍr. These two lines are in an ode of his. And it is said: Fihr b. Mālik is Quraysh; so whoever is of his progeny is a Qurayshī, and whoever is not of his progeny is not a Qurayshī. Quraysh was only called Quraysh from taqarrush, and taqarrush is trade and earning. Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: : They were enriched, instead of shughūsh and khashl from the falling of qurūsh, by fat and pure milk, not adulterated. Ibn Hishām said: al-shughūsh is wheat, called al-shughūsh. Al-khashl are the heads of anklets and bracelets and the like. Al-qurūsh is trade and earning. He says: fat and pure milk used to suffice them instead of this. Al-maḥḍ is fresh pure milk. These lines are in a rajaz poem of his. And Abū Jildah al-Yashkurī said, and Yashkur is b. Bakr b. Wāʾil: : Brothers who accumulated sins against us in a matter of our life, both recent and ancient. This line is among verses of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: It is also said: Quraysh was only called Quraysh because of its gathering together after its dispersal, and gathering together is called taqarrush.
