Translation
✧ Ibn Mudrikah Mudrikah: with ḍammah on the mīm, sukūn on the unpointed dāl, kasrah on the rāʾ, fatḥah on the kāf, then a hāʾ of intensification. Transferred from an active participle of al-idrāk (overtaking). His name was ʿAmr according to the sound opinion held by al-Kalbī, al-Balādhurī, Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim b. Sallām, Ibn Durayd, and al-Mubarrad. Al-Raḍī al-Shāṭibī even went so far as to claim consensus on this. His name was ʿAmr, and he was given the kunyah Abū Hudhayl, and it is said: Abū Khuzaymah. His mother was Khindif, who is Laylā bt. Ḥulwān b. ʿImrān, and her mother was Ḍariyyah bt. Rabīʿah b. Nizār, after whom the protected grazing land of Ḍariyyah was named. The full brothers of Mudrikah, sharing the same father and mother, were: ʿĀmir, who is Ṭābikhah, and ʿUmayr, who is Qamaʿah. It is said that he was the father of Khuzāʿah. Hishām said: Ilyās went out on a journey seeking pasture, and his camels bolted because of a hare. ʿAmr went out after them and overtook them, so he was named Mudrikah (Overtaker). ʿĀmir seized them and cooked them, so he was named Ṭābikhah (Cooker). ʿUmayr hid himself in the tent, so he was named Qamaʿah (Hider). Their mother Laylā came out walking, and Ilyās said to her: "Where are you khindif-ing (walking in a proud, mincing manner)?" So she was named Khindif. Al-khandafah is a kind of gait.
