Translation

✧ Then the year 376 AH began Account of Sharaf al-Dawla’s taking possession of Iraq and the arrest of Samsam al-Dawla In this year, Sharaf al-Dawla Abu al-Fawaris b. ʿAdud al-Dawla marched from al-Ahwaz to Wasit and took possession of it. Samsam al-Dawla sent his brother Abu Nasr to him, seeking to win his sympathy by releasing him, for he had been imprisoned with him, but he did not show him any sympathy. The situation worsened for Samsam al-Dawla, and his troops mutinied against him. He consulted his companions about going to his brother and entering into obedience to him, but they forbade him from that. One of them said: “The right course is that we go up to ʿUkbara, so that we may know thereby who is with us and who is against us. If we see that our number is large, we will fight them and bring out the funds; but if we are unable, we will go to al-Mawsil, for it and the rest of the lands of al-Jabal belong to us, and our affair will grow strong. No doubt rivalry and envy will arise between the Daylam and the Turks, and disorder will occur, and we will attain our aim.” Another of them said: “The right course is that we go to Qirmisin, write to your uncle Fakhr al-Dawla and seek his help, and travel by the road of Khurasan and Isbahan to Fars, and seize it, along with the treasuries of Sharaf al-Dawla and his stores. There is no one there to prevent or repel us. If we do that, Sharaf al-Dawla will not be able to remain in Iraq, and he will then return, and peace will be made.” Samsam al-Dawla turned away from all of them and traveled in a boat to his brother Sharaf al-Dawla with his close attendants. He reached his brother Sharaf al-Dawla, who met him and reassured him. But when he left his presence, he arrested him, and sent to Baghdad those who would take charge of the royal palace. He marched and reached Baghdad in the month of Ramadan, and alighted at al-Shufayʿi, with his brother Samsam al-Dawla with him under arrest. His rule over Iraq had lasted three years and eleven months.
