Then the year 375 AH began
ذِكْرُ عِدَّةِ حَوَادِثَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ خَرَجَ بِعُمَانَ طَائِرٌ مِنَ الْبَحْرِ كَبِيرٌ، أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْفِيلِ، وَوَقَفَ عَلَى تَلٍّ هُنَاكَ، وَصَاحَ بِصَوْتٍ عَالٍ، وَلِسَانٍ فَصِيحٍ: قَدْ قَرُبَ، قَدْ قَرُبَ، قَدْ قَرُبَ، ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ غَاصَ فِي الْبَحْرِ، فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ، ثُمَّ غَابَ وَلَمْ يُرَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ. وَفِيهَا جَدَّدَ صَمْصَامُ الدَّوْلَةِ بِبَغْدَاذَ عَلَى الثِّيَابِ الْإِبْرِيسَمِ وَالْقُطْنِ الْمَبِيعَةِ ضَرِيبَةً مِقْدَارُهَا عُشْرُ الثَّمَنِ، فَاجْتَمَعَ النَّاسُ فِي جَامِعِ الْمَنْصُورِ، وَعَزَمُوا عَلَى قَطْعِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَكَادَ الْبَلَدُ يَفْتَتِنُ، فَأُعْفُوا مِنْ ذَلِكَ. وَمِنَ الْحَوَادِثِ فِيهَا: أَنَّهُ فِي يَوْمِ الْخَمِيسِ لِثَمَانٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ خَلَعَ الطَّائِعُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى صَمْصَامِ الدَّوْلَةِ، وَطَوَّقَهُ، وَسَوَّرَهُ، وَحَمَلَهُ عَلَى فَرَسٍ بِمَرْكَبِ ذَهَبٍ، وَقَادَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِثْلَهُ .
Translation
✧ Mention of several events In this year, in ʿUmān, a large bird came out of the sea, bigger than an elephant, and stood on a hill there, and cried with a loud voice and an eloquent tongue: “It has drawn near, it has drawn near, it has drawn near,” three times, then plunged into the sea. It did that for three days, then disappeared and was not seen after that. In it, Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah renewed in Baghdādh a tax on sold silk and cotton cloth, in the amount of a tenth of the price. The people gathered in the Mosque of al-Manṣūr and resolved to stop praying, and the city was on the verge of sedition, so they were exempted from that. Among the events in it: On Thursday, eight nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh bestowed a robe of honor on Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah, placed a necklace on him, put bracelets on him, mounted him on a horse with a golden saddle, and led before him another like it.
